The flagship smartphone category is about to become more competitive. Early impressions of the Galaxy Note 8, which was unveiled yesterday, are very positive, and we still have LG’s V30 and the new iPhones on the horizon. Now, we might know when to expect Google’s next Pixel handsets, and what hardware they’ll feature.

According to reliable leaker Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, both the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will be unveiled on October 5. This almost matches the original Pixels’ announcement date – October 4, 2016.

Blass also claims that Google’s new devices will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 836. Rumors that they will use the unannounced SoC have been around for months. If true, they’ll likely be the first handsets to feature the chip (the original Pixels were the first phones in the West to sport the Snapdragon 821).

Many flagships, including the Galaxy S8 and Note 8, use the Snapdragon 835. It was thought Samsung might go with the 836 in the latter device, but the Note 8 ended up with the same SoC as the S8.

While the Snapdragon 836 is an upgrade, the improvements over its predecessor are minor – much in the same way that the 821 is a slight revision of the 820. There are small increases in the maximum and base clock speeds, and battery life is better.

The Pixel XL 2 will be manufactured by LG, while the Pixel 2 will once again be made by HTC. Both handsets are rumored to be water-resistant and feature the same squeezable sides found in the HTC U11. Sadly, it seems that Google's phones will be the latest to abandon the headphone jack.

At first I was quite opposed to the omission of headphone jacks, but I've had my pixel for about 10 months now. I think I've used the headphone jack once. We'll survive.

I'm excited, and hope to get my hands on one. Two things Google needs to do better - Make all of the cool colors available in all models, not just the sexy blue in 32gb (wtf). And for the love, if I want to buy one don't make me wait for 4+ months.

Weren't these the same chumps that couldn't stop crowing about and so proud of the fact that they hadn't forsaken the 3.5mm jack not so long ago? Anyway, if they include it or don't include it, it doesn't have the slightest impact on my existance.

I think that was more Samsung than anyone else. Meanwhile, a chunk of pocket lint renders their jacks completely useless.

If this was an Apple article, we'd have legions of trolls posting about what an outrage this is.... but since it's Google, I guess it's ok...

People, it's obvious the 3.5mm jack is a thing of the past - and 99% of people won't care...

Samsung were gloating about it with the release of the S8 but Google were rubbing Apples face in it last year with the intro of the Pixel. Soon every manufacturer will drop them.

The amusing thing is that it's mostly Apple fans doing all the complaining but you're right, most people won't/don't care about the jack, it's just something they've gotten used to and it's human nature to resist change. Besides we have to criticize and complain otherwise we wouldn't be humans.

I think as long as you're not the first one to make the change you are ok, people are at the acceptance stage and the company that went first gets all the hate.

Think I am going to go the Samsung Note 8 at this stage

No.... it's if you're the big bad company making the change.... some small android phones took out the 3.5mm jack before Apple and no one really cared... the whining started after Apple did it cause people like to hate on the big guys...
