Playable version of cancelled 'Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans' surfaces 18 years later

  1. In the mid-90s, Blizzard Entertainment began working on a point-and-click adventure game called Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. The title was originally slated to arrive in the fourth quarter of 1997 but was delayed for more than a year due to communication issues between Blizzard and animators at Animation Magic, a Russian-based animation firm.

As the story goes, Blizzard canceled the game just days before the E3 Expo in 1998 despite the fact that development on the game was nearly complete.

Over the years, we’ve seen gameplay videos surface online but never has there been a playable version available… until now, some 18 years later.

A few days ago, a Scrolls of Lore forum member by the name of Reidor posted a playable version of the game that’s said to be nearly complete. The user described it as a gift for all Blizzard fans, old and new. The fact that the user claims he is from Russia suggests he / she may have been a former employee of Animation Magic which went belly-up in 2001.

Bill Roper, who worked at Blizzard from 1994 through 2003, said around the time the game was cancelled that expectations from an adventure game – from both fans and Blizzard – changed over the course of the project. Had it arrived three years earlier, the game would have been great, he said.

Now that the unfinished game has found its way online, one can almost guarantee that it’ll remain available to anyone that wants to give it a whirl, even if Blizzard does shut down the original source. As Joe Rogan once said, you can’t stop the Internet.

The ogre appears too civilized, an unimaginative GI version.

Definitely going to have to give it a try... I'm assuming it's gonna be bad, otherwise they'd have released it...

Orc. But yes, he's far too upright and human-looking.
