Problem with IF function

XP sp3, Excel (I think it's 2003? not the new type with Vista)

Trying to set up a small spreadsheet that will calculate 3 numerical values
across in the same row in columns B thru D when I enter a number value
in the A column, but leaves the cells in B, C & D columns blank until I do
enter the number in the A column.

I've got an IF function working OK in the B column, showing
nothing if there's no value in the A column.

I can't get an IF function working in the C column essentially
doing the same thing - only showing a value if there's a value
in the B column, which only shows as a result of the IF function
if I enter a value in the A column. The 1st part of my IF function
in the C column has to be the cell reference to the calculated
number in the B column which only happens if I enter a numerical
value in the A column, but the error message says that I can't use
a cell reference for that - it calls it the wrong type of data.

I've got the IF function I want to use working OK in B column cells
where I have entered a value in the A column and a value resulting
from the IF function in the B column is calculated and shown in
the B column. Then the IF function shows with no error message
and works correctly in the C column.

What else can I do but use a cell reference for that? There's no
numerical value in the cell in the B column until I enter a value
in the A column and the IF function in the B column calculates one.

I hope I've got it explained so it's understandable?

Thanks for any help!

I do things like this to help me learn how to do them.
