While many of us are still using devices with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 CPU, the company has now revealed a new, more powerful model with the Snapdragon 805 Ultra HD quad-core processor.

As its name suggests, the most interesting feature of Qualcomm's new CPU is its ability to handle Ultra HD 4K video playback across your smartphone, tablet and smart TV. "Using a smartphone or tablet powered by Snapdragon 805 processor is like having an Ultra HD home theater in your pocket, with 4K video, imaging and graphics, all built for mobile," executive vice-president of Qualcomm Technologies, Murthy Renduchintala said.

It packs the Krait 450 CPU, with 4 cores each running at 2.5GHz fed by 25.6 GB/s of max memory bandwidth, which according to the company will make apps run much smoother. Designed to bring the most powerful and highest quality mobile video, Qualcomm also says that the 805's Adreno 420 GPU will run graphics with 40% more power than its predecessor.

The first will come with the 28nm Gobi MDM9x25, that first made an appearance earlier this year, and will support LTE carrier aggregation and LTE 4. The second option will have an LTE modem called the 20nm Gobi MDM9x35, which will bring LTE advanced support with up to 300Mbps down speeds.

Renduchintala continued with, "We're delivering the mobile industry's first truly end-to-end Ultra HD solution, and coupled with our industry leading Gobi LTE modems and RF transceivers, streaming and watching content at 4K resolution will finally be possible."

Although some suggest we could be seeing commercial devices with the Snapdragon 805 processor as soon as early 2014, it looks as though Qualcomm has said that manufacturers won't begin sampling the product until early next year, pointing at a later retail appearance.

4k on a mobile device is obviously overkill, but does it make regular resolution screens run 4 times smoother and faster?

haha just slightly seings one video will pretty much take all your memory up and will drain the battery in like half an hour

Just because you can play a 4k video doesn't mean the screens are 4k resolution, they seem to have left that info out. hell TV's are just getting into 4k resolutions.
