Recent AMD Radeon graphics driver is reportedly bricking Windows

Hey guys, I received and installed my 7900xtx on Valentine’s Day, I’m on windows 10, and I used DDU to do a fresh driver install. Well I immediately noticed windows and driver issues. I’m getting random blue screens or even my pc will lock up when I close a game. The whole thing is bizarre and sad. When everything works though this card blows everything out of the water so I don’t mind being patient
To beginning, putting standard ram parameters would be a good start ( frequency and latency )

I would add that OBS AV1 integration is not integrated for windows 10 . Plus , if we refer to released note, this integration is only for recording , not for streaming . If we take in account that this obs update came very late since 7900 series launch , it is another prove that software are generally against AMD due to obviously wintel nvidia as usual ( I think obs has integrated AV1 on nvidia cards since a long moment ago ).
Note that , despite sukcing softwares , AMD hardware does a good performance , so imagine if they had softwares with them .
Yes very long time later:
Nov 1, 2022 - OBS Studio 28.1 Changes: Added NVENC AV1 hardware encoder on Windows
Jan 8, 2023 - OBS Studio 29.0 Changes: Added support for the AMD AV1 Encoder for the RX7000 series GPUs on Windows, Added support for the Intel AV1 Encoder for Arc GPUs on Windows

In january, there was AV1 through 1 or 1,5 weeks and with no reasons they removed it . No AV1 on OBS for 7900 exept this week , I think they even removed H265 . Now there is only H264 and X 264 , nice biaised soft
Note my error , actually it is like note released on windows 10 but no AV1 for streaming .
If it is just for recording, Adrenalin works perfectly exept with... AV1 at too high HD bitrate ( cause hard drive ? ) , not obs case ( stream no more 9000 k )

I always come back to the red team, but each time they manage to let me down. Good hardware with shlt software, it's what I always say about them. Now I don't know if to blame this on Microsoft or AMD. But if was M$ I would not be in a hurry to fix something AMD related since they have a low market share. A niche product as some would say.

No problem with brand u use but paying for brands they just want to abuse consumers ,cheating in software and paying sites or guys to make believe their hardware is better , I avoid them . Paying for suk cking hardware comparing to another one , I avoid that .
If u accept that , hope u wont blare when u will have to pay some suxing hardware for hightprices because of cheated competition .
Note that software can always be improved not like what u pay .
For exemple , blender, the pro " soft " that sites always shows . A look at this to debunk ?

Now I think I'll give those drivers a try;) I still sit on 22.4 as that was most stable version for me, but at least this could be some fun;) I play on linux mostly anyway, so not that much of an issue with my Windows boot.

Xmp was origin of lot of problems even when I hadnt the xtx yet . Reboots , crashes , difficulties in computer start, with only 2 slots rams . Of course xmp must be desactivated and standard DDR timings put manually .

So I should disable XMP profile?

Hey it might be possible to restore the drive by secure erasing it, I have a older SSD that went super dead slow but after secure erasing its still going strong :)

Yeah, I used a GParted Live disk I had laying around to do the secure wipe

It worked fine

Partitioning and formatting the drive went from over one minute to 2 seconds flat

Fixed for now

I updated to the Valentines day driver set also. I am not happy about it. I will post this info again here just to bring attention to how horrible this experience has been so that others can pay attention and hopefully new drivers get released.
I am a lowly iGPU user with the AMD Ryzen 2200G iGPU with Vega 8 Graphics. I've been having issues with OneNote for Microsoft Office 365. It has been freezing up on my Windows 10 system lately. The drivers I were using were from 2018. So, I thought maybe if I updated my system with the Valentines day drivers (23.2.1) it would fix the OneNote issues.

Wrong. It only compounded them. Or at the very least, swapped one problem for another. I've yet to experience the freeze-ups with the new 23.2.1. So, that's still up in the air about whether it's been resolved or not. The new issue is that when drawing with a pen in OneNote on Windows 10, it basically lags, showing no trace whatsoever of the pens path until you release the mouse button. That's just completely unacceptable.

I've tried rolling back the drivers and I think it partially worked. But my screen saver is now broken so I'm not sure. I probably should have used the DDU utility (whatever that is) for a cleaner uninstall.

I do share the same suspicions as others that the recent Windows 10 update could possibly be more to blame than the actual drivers from AMD. But at this point, since I updated them both almost at the same time, I'll never know for sure.

(y) (Y)Thanks for posting this. I have several HDs that I want to secure erase, and I have been looking for something like this. My "router" is an openSuSE LEAP pc. I'll use that, or perhaps, make a bootable usb stick.

No, AMD. You were my last bastion. I've had countless Nvidia issues (including windows being hosed) and Intel is laughable on the driver front.... not you, too.

But really, software is hard. I've had much better luck with AMD in the last 3 years than the other two... so this disappoints.

Pretty sure this is windows' fault since I've reformatted my pc twice since this driver released... anywho if you let windows install all of their worthless drivers during first setup and install this new driver, my pc black screened during a reboot and hung there infinitely until I forced a reboot outside of windows. if you force windows to not install driver updates, this release works fine.

stop auto installing graphics drivers at the minimum on new pcs microsoft. I dont need your help installing drivers bud.

A sorry state indeed - it must be quite hard - especially if unknown windows update coming.
to put if in perspective - Microsoft updates which they control can cause big problems.
I think Apple on a very controlled system has caused problems on it's phones with IOS updates - how can that happen ?

Maybe Nvidia has a larger test bed - suppose both seem them out to beta testers

Remember folks - let others go through the door first - fortune favours the Scaredy Cats

I am curious - how could a graphics driver change mainboard Bios settings ? Am genuinely curious.
If your BIOS is not password protected, malware can do that

If this driver did indeed change your mainboard BIOS, then it is indeed malware

I always password protect the BIOS and use Dual BIOS mainboards that have a Read-Only Backup BIOS just in case

Updated when techspot prior article announced it had no issues with RX6800 with Win11insider and pretty much had no issues with adrenalin either only couple instances of windows update messing things up if anything.

I update my 7900xtx drivers to 23.1.1 and got endless boot. Looked at the motherboard error code, looked it up online, said it was usb. Turns out my USB hub was dying and it was preventing bios from posting.

There is so many things thing being blamed on gpu drivers it's ridiculous. Since removing the faulty usb hub I have no problems with either 23.1.1 or 23.2.1 drivers.

Diagnosing a single hardware problem can be easy or difficult (depending on the exact problem)

I find that 2 simultaneous hardware problems can be a real challenge at times

In addition to a bad SSD, I also had an SD card inserted in my laptop that was causing issues with this recent problem that, at first, "seemed" to be caused from a Windows Update as the problems all began immediately after updating Windows

The last time I had multiple hardware failures causing problems, the only way to diagnose was to replace components one by one from an identical (working) computer with identical parts until everything worked consistently

When that fails, I had to plug the suspected bad components into the known good computer until the problems could be duplicated (one by one)

That one was a real mind bender

Winter static causing random shutdowns + a bad USB cable causing errors and disk read issues + a Buggy BIOS that required a new CMOS battery and a factory reset, all causing similar issues simultaneously

Throw in a buggy stick of RAM, and you've got a real winner on yer hands

What appears to be a single issue is usually just that

But sometimes you get a few curve-balls
