Why it matters: If you have not played Red Dead Redemption 2 yet, you are probably in the minority. The Rockstar hit walked away with four awards at the 2018 Game Awards Show, including Best Narrative, Best Performance, Best Musical Score, and Best Audio Design. So it's definitely one to play if you haven't already.

On Thursday, Microsoft announced it is bringing Red Dead Redemption 2 to Xbox Game Pass on May 7. While the critically acclaimed game has already been making the rounds for 18 months, it is sure to draw some free-to-play attention from Game Pass members.

To make room for the horse opera, the wildly popular Grand Theft Auto V will leave the platform on the same day. Some users might find this upsetting since GTAV only arrived on the service in January. However, Microsoft mentioned that subscribers can take advantage of their 20-percent discount to buy the game while it is still on Game Pass to keep playing after it's gone.

Subscribers can begin pre-downloading the game via the Xbox Game Pass Android or iOS app or on the console starting today so that it is ready to run as soon as the clock strikes 12. Just like with GTAV, this is the full version of Red Dead Redemption 2, including free access to RDR Online.

Of course, by free, we mean $10 per month for an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Microsoft also offers the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bundle, which includes Xbox Live Gold, for $15 per month. Right now, the package deal is running a promotion that gives players the first month of both services for $1 — not a bad price for those interested in giving it a spin.

I'm assuming this is just for regular Game Pass, not Game Pass for PC right? Speaking of which, I think a Game Pass for PC article would be pretty timely for all of the stay-at-home people. I only recently found out about it and was surprised it's just $5 a month with a bunch of games. Without getting too much into the "you don't own it" argument, I'll just say I find it really great for all those single player games I won't play more than once. Plague Tale: Innocence (for example) is always $30+ for PC. It's like 10-12 hours long and if I can beat it in a month, that's a $25 savings.

I realize this sounds like a shill post, but I just think it (and it's price) should be talked about more, especially while more and more people are feeling the financial burdens of COVID-19.

Totally with you. I've been harping that Xbox pc game pass is probably the best deal right now for pc gamers. Lots of great games.

Subscribers keep an eye on Newegg. Late last summer, a few weeks before Christmas, and just a few weeks ago they had Ultimate (Xbox, PC, Gold) at buy 3 months and get 3 months free. It wasn't even full price for 3 months but was discounted slightly to $38. Also they have occasional sales for 3 months at half price ($23.00).

I am paid up until March of 2022 and it cost me right around $140 (Under $6 a week average).

You are correct. This is only for the Xbox Game Pass, not PC. And thanks for the idea. I will try to look out for PC Game Pass coverage for future stories.
