A hot potato: How would you feel about Amazon having a key to your apartment building? Is it convenient or slightly worrying? Seeing as it can already access thousands of properties, there’s a chance the company already has one, and it's offering financial incentives to more landlords for installing the systems, according to a new report.

Amazon’s Key for Business allows drivers to make deliveries without needed residents or building staff to buzz them in. The system works through the Amazon Flex app—drivers request building access, which is granted after Amazon confirms the employee’s ID, route, location, and the time of the request.

Amazon says the Key for Business program allows goods to be delivered to building residents quicker, ensures a more secure digital verification of drivers, increases the success of first-time deliveries, and results in fewer stolen items.

But the program is raising security and privacy concerns among residents, especially with the risk of devices being hacked. Plus, Amazon leaves it up to landlords whether they inform residents of the building's entrance into the program.

According to Associated Press, Amazon salespeople have been partnering with locksmiths and approaching apartment managers about installing the devices. The company does this for free and sometimes offers a $100 gift card as an incentive.

AP writes that only the U.S. Postal Service has a way to enter apartment buildings in order to get to mailboxes. UPS experimented with a similar system in 2018 but ended the test without saying why.

Amazon key

Amazon unveiled its “key” delivery system in 2017 that allows drivers to open customers’ front doors and drop off packages inside. It expanded to include delivery to vehicles in 2018 and garages in 2019. Walmart has its own version—and can even stocks your fridge. Neither company has revealed how many people use these services.

Plot twist: Amazon is set to reveal "Amazon Living" which is a major investment into the real estate market. Amazon not only has your key, but is your landlord now: Apartments for rent only for Prime members! If we say we delivered, we did. If you are late on your payment, drones will automatically open your house and throw all of your crap into the garbage and change the locks on you.

The future is now!

Well, I have a house.
And I would NEVER give any company a key to my house.
They can leave anything I order behind the house or in the garage tho.
Same here, except I would never let Amazon in my garage.

Now, you joke, but this just might become reality. ;)

Sure mate, can't have them stealing your RTX 3090 and other cards.

Jokes aside, this really is a horrible idea. But in time, normalization will happen. Future generation born with this concept will find no harm in it. We all already have smart speakers at our home listening to us 24x7.

So yeah, matter of time before we put Amazon key on our door and back it up with Amazon camera saving data in Amazon cloud. All well and good, unless someone in Amazon for whatever reason does something to you and footage and logs are 'cleared'.

I could get mad at amazon for thinking of the idea but really I have to get mad at people lazy enough to LET SOME STRANGER in their house.

Reminds me of that one newer X-file episode where the drones and machines are upset with Fox & Scully and they are trying to chase/kill them because Mulder didn't tip after getting poor service at robot operated restaurant.

As for allowing Amazon drivers into my property to deliver something....no thank you. There are enough of these drivers out there that have been caught stealing packages they are supposed to be delivering. I wouldn't want someone like that to have any kind of access to my stuff. I'm sure many of these drivers are decent people and wouldn't steal, but it only takes 1 worthless piece of $hit to put a blemish on an entire company and service they offer when that one person does go around and steal.

You need to make this into a commercial that would be awesome lol.

There's a big difference between letting them into your building and letting them into your apartment. Which is it?

If they just get inside your building and leave the stuff in communal package lockers that would be OK with me, especially if the building has additional security measures such as cameras.
