Retailers: Gamers are ditching the PS3 for Xbox 360

Geo settled not Sony.
Sony owns the software,it states in their user agreement that you mustn't alter the software he did, which means he broke the law then gets other people to pay for his defense as well.

I'm with Relic on this one as to how Sony handled the situation. But, I'm also rather appalled at the number of "Sony deserved it" and "karma bit Sony" posts here... While I disliked the entire geohot lawsuit fiasco, and firmly believe that we should be able to do what we want with hardware we purchase, I can't condone the actions of these hackers, like many of you are doing. What you are really saying is "All of customers Sony had on PSN deserved to have their information hacked and deal with identity issues." There are other ways to hit Sony and NOT jeopardize customer data. If any of the player credit data is used illegally, you people DO realize that you have just cheered on malicious thieves who were probably just interested in stealing, rather than "proving a point" here, don't you? Or is the hatred of Sony so severe that it blinds you to the fact that you are applauding a serious crime? Granted, Sony were fools in how they secured their site, and how they stored customer data, how they reported and dealt with the hacking... But that does not excuse or justify celebrating the burglars that broke into their house.

Haha! I already have 2 friends who have traded in their PS3's for Xboxes, strangely both prefer the xbox?

I'm glad to see the Playstation sales going down, this situation should have never happened and the way Sony has so far dealt with it has gone from bad to worst.

I don't think Sony will keep a foothold in the console wars for much longer if they keep the PSN network down for another month or so.

I have also found a few comments above saying that the PS3 has a larger user base than the Xbox? Thats not true at all from the reports I have seen for last yeat, I thought the Xbox was ahead by 7 million or so?

Anyway I was a PS2 fan but not a PS3 one so to be honest i'm glad to see it go, people go to the xbox or PC both of which in my opinion are better for gaming.

Gaming is not the soul reason to be trading in the system after all of this as well. A lot of people used PSN for other things as well. This includes their Facebook, Netflixs, Hulu, and other internet means. I know people who use it more to browse these mediums more than their cell phone or computers. Just proving how much Sony's influence is there for the base of social networking.

Not to mention with personal information now out there for these hackers to get a hold of, people question the possibilities of it happening more. If it happened once, who's to say the network won't go again. Its no wonder people are jumping ship to MS. They want to have security while storing personal information on something they use a lot while still getting a high quality gaming experience.

There is no deserving of anything here. Sony did screw up and they paid dearly for it. And of course their sales are going to suffer for it. The PS3 is still a great system, but people will second guess storing information on there for any reason what so ever. Personally, I wouldn't even dream of keeping my personal data on a console. It is a computer and it can be hacked. Its just kinda obvious I would think.

I wonder if the hackers could do a round 2 on the PSN network when it comes back up, that would be hilarious and satisfying

I disagree with your comment partially. I have a PS3 and have around 6-7 games but use it primarily for netflix and BD movies. However, I think many are trading their consoles in because of how Sony handled the entire situation. I'm an adult who had a credit card attached to my account and was pretty upset to find out later rather than sooner that it could have been compromised. To not have a secured network for such a large company is completely unacceptable. For this reason alone, I would consider trading my console in; however, there are those online gamers going through withdrawals that are trading the PS3 in for all the wrong reasons. The PS3, in my opinion, is far more superior as a multimedia system, which I utilize it more for than gaming but damn I do like to play games online and this outage will only be worth it if they bring it back better than ever to regain customer confidence over time. We shall see.

I honestly want someone to explain all the hostility toward Sony. What have they ever done besides provide a superior gaming experience both online and offline as well as an ever-evolving multimedia experience. And no I am not a Sony PR person!

Sony did not asked to be hacked and currently there is no evidence to suggest that they were negligent in their security. Why not place blame where its due? THE HACKERS!

I actually blogged about this recently. Check it out at http://tekdog.cc/2011/05/editorial-the-psn-blame-game/

@Vrmithrax Agreed, cheering and being happy that Sony customers and fellow gamers have had their data stolen is shameful.

'Superior experience' is subjective, and will definitely vary depending on who you ask.

This congressional testimony might interest you. Any company running outdated server software with no firewall is negligent in my books if true.

I think there are really two issues here..

1. The service has been down for a considerable amount of time.

2. Sony's total failure to protect PSN, and SOE users Credit cards and other personal information.

People are trading in their gear not just because they cant play COD, but because Sony chose to have such inadequate security in place.

Their hubris is why this happened, they were too big to mess with. Well thats not really the case, and now people who have had to spend HOURS at banks, and on the phone with their credit card providers, identity theft companies, etc. and are voting with their wallets.

I'm not a console gamer, but I did play EQII and some other Sony online games, and have had to spend a lot of time making sure I don't end up getting screwed in all this. I will never again trust Sony with my private information, they simply cant be trusted to keep it safe.

LMAO...my ps3 went YLOD right before the hack...lol...I had no love for Sony before this and even
less now.

hello ...

this will help purify the PS3 owner's list, sorry if for once I do seem mean, overreacting & even pathetic (I admit), yet I'm right about it!

It's not a problem owning more than 1 platform for gaming, i think those who acts like there is a best platform for gaming, are either not objective enough or maybe stupid enough, for a gamer is a gamer when he can play Tennis for Two, Legend of Zelda, Crysis, Uncharted 2, Halo reach & have fun with all of them ...I agree we do have choices, tastes & favourite genres, that's where i am even in right ... You love Super Mario, go for Nintendo, You love Masterchief, it's on the Xbox & Kratos is on the PS3, PC is the ONLY multi-purpose platform that does gaming better, but you don't see same on it, it's a matter of business, ownership & technology!

I think it's foolish to compare services, OK you want to play games, since when ONLINE is the ONLY way to play games !?

I think it's better that those who do not have a good insight of gaming do leave a platform, so we can have only those who knows what they want & respect it. Go to the Xbox360 & PC, i'm staying on PS3 & PC, like a lot who knows what they really want ... i just feel it's pathetic that some think SONY should just close it's door (will you give a job to the ex employees?), that the PS2 was a far superior console (oh yeah, tell me how? the PS3 is as good & even better than a PS2, it is a PS2 with better GFX, online features, more multimedia options, etc ... just don't see how can it be lower!)

I may be now playing more on the PC, but i do enjoy MK9 on the PS3 too & can't wait for online services to be up, till then i shall practice to be a great Kombatant ... oh you may flame me, but first check if you will not look lame afterwards, for I know i may sound like a fanboy, i'm not, i'm objective & against the "immature look" of some of your comments ...

in the end, the only 1 enjoying himself is the one that can choose & even if money is a problem to most, it's not an excuse!

cheers!

MK9, only game I have played on the PS3 since all this started. I'll admit, its a lot of fun.. I've been a big MK fan.

How you are not a fanboy? If you arent.. what is the definition of fanboy? Am I a PC fanboy because I mainly DO EVERYTHING on the PC? Or does this make me a Windows fanboy?

I dunno.. just curious to what fanboy means then, I guess.

You are not a real Sony fan if your going to give the console away. The console by default is better that xbox 360. These are losers that are on the fence. Any douche bag that says they are going to give up the console and get a 360 is a direct ****ing ***** or has mental problems. It is called patience and understanding. Do something else in the mean time, like find work, or read a book.

I am sorry, but reading some post out of an unnamed internet forum is not evidence. Not to mention the fact that this guy is an outsider and far from an eye witness so he is probably missing some context here.

Maybe Sony was negligent. Who knows? But when is some of this hostility going to be directed at the one(s) who breached the network. Again I ask, Why are we putting the victim on trial here?

hello ...

@ Trillionsin - "chapeau"...

you beat me by that, i admit i think i overused the word fanboy here, for i guess we either or not at some point & at some moment ...

anyway, i know @ least two person still having fun during the PSN outage :p ... MK rules & playing on hardest settings is simply A.W.E.S.O.M.E!!! ;)

now need to buy a 3DTV & have fun, btw, today you doing ALMOST EVERYTHING on PC, just make you human :p

cheers!

That's a new one, didn't realize a congressional hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives on Energy & Commerce specifically the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade with a known computer security expert, Dr. Gene Spafford, is considered an unnamed internet forum. Oh and by the way Sony was invited to this little shindig, they however declined to show up. At least they replied to the inquiries before the hearing, so go Sony!

Admitting that certain personal data wasn't encrypted is negligent in my opinion, especially when compounded with the allegations from the hearing.

I'm not sure what you've been reading over the past few weeks, but I've seen plenty of vitriol and foolish posts on both sides blaming one another.

these people are ******. the network has been down for a while, and now it's back up. yay. too bad you cant use it since you weren't patient like the rest of us.

I survived the PSN outage of 2011! did YOU?!

lmao.. really? of course a guest would say this.

I remember when 6 or 7 years ago, gaming was gaming. Buy a game and stick it in the console and play. Today it is just funny. People need internet on a console just to play it. WTF? Are there not good games out already? Doesn't PS3 have the strongest first party lineup right now? I'm glad I game mostly on the PC. Online is extra to gaming for me. A good game is first priority. Sell me your PS3s and I'll be glad to play that long list without any thoughts about online starvation lol

Oooh PSN was down I gotta switch my console to play less games RIGHT NOW! I agree with the others here. Go outside and see how good it feels. It will bring a smile to your face lol

And to think THIS is our future...

Had a PS3 for 2 years, just traded it in with all my games and picked up an XBOX 360. Except for BluRay, it is superior in every way. Halo is a far better game that my kids can play, than anything on PS3. XBOX Live is 10X better than PSN, and worth the money. The main reason I traded: My boys can create their own "Indie" games on the XBOX 360 and learn to be software developers while having fun. Microsoft got it right. I'll never go back to Sony, good bye to you and your hacked up network.
