Roku last month released a long overdue upgrade to the Roku 3. Aptly named the Roku 4, the streaming box featured faster hardware capable of 4K playback albeit at a $30 premium compared to its predecessor. In the event $129.99 is a bit too much to spend on a set-top box (a valid argument considering the competition), perhaps the company’s latest offering will better fit the budget.

Announced on Wednesday, the Roku SE is billed as the company’s most affordable player to date (I suppose that’s accurate if you don’t count the Roku Streaming Stick). The “SE” stands for special edition as the player will only be available in limited quantities for the Black Friday weekend.

The Roku SE can handle 1080p streams, providing access to nearly 3,000 streaming channels, and is compatible with both HDMI and analog televisions. The box lacks some of the premium features found on more expensive models such as remote finder, voice search or even an Ethernet jack. 4K playback is obviously out of the question and although we don’t yet have a detailed specifications list to comb through, it’s probably a safe bet to assume the streamer won’t pack loads of memory or a powerful processor.

The Roku SE will be priced at $49.99 both online and at select retailers although on Black Friday, you’ll be able to snag it at the low price of just $24.99. The company didn’t rule out the possibility of promotions on other Roku streamers during the Black Friday weekend. What’s more, Sling TV is still offering half off the price of a Roku 3 or a free Roku Streaming Stick when you pre-pay for three months of service.
