Xbox is pushing back on claims that PS5 is outselling it 8-to-1 in GTA VI pre-orders

In brief: IGN recently stirred controversy when it claimed PlayStation is outselling Xbox by a rate of 8 to 1 in terms of GTA VI pre-orders. The data came from the publisher's affiliate linking program which, according to Microsoft, shouldn't be relied upon as a true indicator of pre-order performance.

In a follow-up with Windows Central, an Xbox spokesperson explicitly said IGN's data doesn't represent pre-order data. The representative added that Microsoft has seen record orders, and that people should wait for "real data" instead of clicks on affiliate links.

Rockstar opened pre-orders for the highly anticipated game on June 25, quelling cost rumors while simultaneously creating new controversies in the process. The standard edition of the game is priced at $79.99 while the Ultimate Edition commands $99.99. It's not the $100 base price that some had feared might come to fruition, but it certainly carries a premium price tag compared to what some people are used to.

What's interesting here is that while folks are debating how much AAA games should cost in the modern era of complex games and decade-plus development timelines, console makers continue to push the cost of aging hardware to new heights. Sure, people are upset, but you wouldn't know it given the debate around game pricing.

Take Microsoft, for example. The Xbox maker recently announced its third console price hike in 15 months. Starting August 1, an Xbox Series S with 512GB of storage will retail for $499. The same system debuted in late 2020 – nearly six year ago – for just $299. The PS5, which launched in within a week of the Xbox Series, started at $399 for the digital edition. That console now sells for $599.

Again, what's wild here is that premium game prices have been "expensive" for decades. Look back at sales ads from the 90s and you'll regularly see AAA games selling for anywhere between $59.99 and $74.99. We're now 30 years removed and prices are mostly still in this same range. It's the hardware that's gone through the roof.

Grand Theft Auto VI is due out November 19.

How dumb does one need to be to pre-order a digital code.
As if they are going to run out of bits and bytes....
Further, do people honestly think these companies AREN'T greedy enough to NOT generate as many download codes as possible to satiate demand?

We probably WILL see servers being overwhelmed and you likely won't be able to play the game reliably for days after launch so I wouldn't even try to buy it. Frankly, so many games have been released in incomplete states for so many years now that I typically wait several weeks before I buy a game. Now that I've gotten older, I usually wait until the first steam sale to buy games.

Xbox fans are probably more likely to use Microsoft Edge, which overwrites affiliate links with Microsoft's own.

Given the ratio of hardware sales being 2:1 and Xbox having much less appeal to kids than Playstation, I would guess the ratio it's outselling on Playstation is actually less than 2:1

PS outsold Xbox like 5:1 this gen, if not more, this might be true. PS5 Pro will be the best way to play GTA 6 unless you can wait for PC/PS6 release in 1-2 years.

Next "Xbox generation" is simply going to be Windows PCs. Project Helix. Xbox Handheld. These will run Windows for sure. Hardware will be outsourced for the most part. They might have "Helix" but others will probably make hardware too; It's just PCs. Like Steam Machine.

There is little money in actually making the consoles. Sometimes they are even sold at a loss to lure people into the ecosystem. Now they will milk you. They earn vastly more money on software, accesories and subscriptions.

Microsoft cares about Windows marketshare and Game Pass subs. This will be their goal with "Xbox" going forward.

This might also make "PC gaming" more relevant to companies like Rockstar.
I doubt Rockstar will settle with just hitting PS6 for their next big game (RDR3/GTA7).
If Xbox in the future will just be gaming PCs running Windows, Rockstar will for sure do a PC version on launch too.

I can't wait to play GTA 6 (when all bugs are sorted out and QoL changes are done) on PC with 200+ fps at 200+ Hz

30 fps is pure trash, not even 60 is enough for me. I can't enjoy games with less than 120 fps. Runs like garbage. Ruins the immersion. So I will gladly wait for a PC version, with mod support, way better graphics and performance and with bugs squashed.

Me buy a console? Never.
Preorder PC games, never.
Buy on release date, never.
Buy on first sale, never.

Wait for crack, play it and if enjoyed it then buy on big sale.

I went out and bought the Xbox X for $599 from BJ's with 1TB. Aside from GTA6, I might not use it at all. Had GTA6 been coming immediately to the PC, I wouldn't buy the Xbox at all.

What happened to your claim of 100% games having Windows in requirements?

Just be careful to not stumble over beard you manage to grow till it happens. If ever.

Except you will never buy it after completion. And this is why Rockstar don't prioritize PC version at all.

I have doubts that rockstar is selling as well as they hoped or pretending to have sold.

A lot of propaganda and paid sponsors trying to convince ppl otherwise.

Along many other titles I have GTA V and RDR2 in my games library witch I bought after playing the cracked game.
Got them on Christmas discounts.
