Ryzen 7 9800X3D could be the first 3D V-Cache CPU to outpace the standard model's frequency

Something to look forward to: AMD is gearing up to unleash its next-gen Ryzen 9000 series CPUs with 3D V-Cache. If a recent leak proves accurate, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D could be an absolute monster for gaming rigs, as it features a higher base clock than its non-3D V-Cache variant, marking a first for this model.

The leak comes from the Chinese video platform Bilibili, where someone shared a Cinebench R23 benchmark run supposedly from the unannounced 9800X3D chip. The most eye-catching specification is its 4.7GHz base clock, which would be a staggering 900MHz higher than the standard Ryzen 7 9700X's 3.8GHz base frequency.

To put that into perspective, AMD's previous X3D offerings with 3D V-Cache all had lower base clocks compared to their non-X3D counterparts. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D had a 4.2GHz base clock versus 4.5GHz on the standard 7950X. Similarly, the 7900X3D has a 4.4GHz base clock compared to the 7900X's 4.7GHz frequency.

If this 4.7GHz base clock leak for the 9800X3D is accurate, AMD's engineers have achieved quite a feat in optimizing the Zen 5 architecture with stacked 3D V-Cache. The leaker also claims the chip can sustain an impressive 5.2GHz all-core boost under full load, which would be 400MHz higher than the non-X3D Ryzen 7 9700X.

Of course, it's essential to take any unverified leak with a significant grain of salt.

That said, there's another rumor circulating that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D could launch in early November, specifically between the 1st and 5th, if an alleged AMD employee tip is accurate. This information comes from the Chiphell forums, which previously revealed that the CPU could launch earlier than expected. The 1st seems plausible for pre-orders, with actual sales likely starting midweek on the 5th, based on past AMD releases.

As for why AMD has moved up the launch date, it's likely related to the standard Ryzen 9000 "Granite Ridge" chips not delivering the kind of performance uplifts Team Red had hyped. Additionally, with Intel's "Arrow Lake-S" CPUs debuting this month and AMD experiencing lackluster sales, the company might be rushing the 9800X3D out early to reinvigorate interest in the desktop space. Given the alleged clock speeds, the chip could indeed succeed in that endeavor.

If all goes as planned, the full AMD Ryzen 9000X3D lineup with 64MB of 3D V-Cache is expected to include three chips: the 16-core 9950X3D, the 12-core 9900X3D, and the star of the show, the eight-core/16-thread 9800X3D.

The increase in efficiency, and it seems like both AMD and Intel are going this route this generation, means that AMD can push the CCDs further since the cache acts as an insulating layer. I'm actually really looking forward to this because the non-3d variants are still powerhouses. Since the 9000 series isn't selling well, I think the non-3d variants could get step price drops and might pick one up.

My desktop still has a 3800X in it(don't judge me) and I've been thinking about dropping a 5700X3D in, but I might make the jump AM5 and send the 3800x to the great server rack in the garage if the 9000 series prices settle down.

My next major purchase is likely to be a laptop with HX 370 in it. I DONT want a dGPU in my next laptop, the 890M is more than what I need.

But going back to X3D, I'm interested in seeing how the 9900/9950X3D perform with both CCDs having extra cache. I have a feeling that the 9800X3D will still be the gaming king because of thermals and TDP, but I'm really excited to see how the 12 and 16core parts perform.

If this is true then this Christmas sales season will be a good time to jump to AM5 platform. My final upgrade would be a good B650 mobo, a 3D Vcache CPU and a 8800XT (hopefully) to stay loyal to a 1440p OLED monitor (G6 or 2725DF). Let's see if AMD can really deliver something really special.

I'm still sporting an AMD Ryzen 5 3600... (don't judge me, it performs admirably on the games I play).
I WAS going to upgrade to the 5800X3D but due to no more supply that idea has dissapeared (still might go the 7 5700X3D route as they still seem to be in stock locally).
But the above information now makes me think its soon to be time to jump on the AM5 9800X3D bandwagon...

Oh yes............I'll definitely be doing that! Given that it's AMD we're talking about........."much ado about nothing" as someone once said...........LOL........

The AM4 X3D chips are already twice as fast as the CPUs in the consoles and will comfortably run every game for the rest of this generation. I'd just get that instead of doing a whole platform upgrade at this point. Put the saved money towards a better GPU, or a future CPU/platform upgrade once the next gen consoles launch.

I'm not surprised non 3D chips aren't selling. AMD have made a rod for their own back with the X3D chip. If gamers are looking to upgrade, it's surely smarter to keep your money and wait for the X3D variant?

I'm really looking forward to the 9800X3D CPU, I passed on the 7800X3D cause frankly my 5800X3D CPU is still over powering any game I play. Partnered with my 4080 Super and this thing is still a beast.

Heck my second machine is a 5600X with a 7900XTX and it doesn't bow down to any game I throw at it.

Yes I replaced the 7900XTX with a 4080 Super just for triple screen iRacing.

Come on AMD lets have the 9800X3D (at a resonable price) I might add. Don't try to stiff us.

If they manage a 10% clock speed boost over the 7800x3D, at about 5.5GHz max boost (up from 5GHz), then Intel will not have anything to compete with in gaming even with their next generation.

Considering 7000X3D drops close to 4.5 GHz on 3D cache enabled CCDs under heavy load, this is huge.

9800X3D with 20% increased ST and 30% increased MT perf will be a huge upgrade. I might even replace my 7800X3D if this holds true.

9800X3D with 5.2 GHz all-core speed and up to 5.5 GHz boost is almost too good to be true. My 7800X3D is going straight in the trash bin if true. Just kidding, will use it in my HTPC.

I might go AM5 and leave my 5800X3D if this is true. 5800X3D starting to hold me back and I am considering RTX 5090 on release.

It drops to 4.5? Never seen that for mine, its just 4.8, and it even usually stays at 9. AIO does help for that. Interesting, could it be because of my massive undervolt and AIO?
