Samsung and AT&T have announced the Focus 2, the successor to the earlier Focus Windows Phone smartphones sold by the carrier. The Focus 2 features support for AT&T's LTE network - a first for a Windows Phone from Samsung - and runs Windows Phone 7.5.

The Focus 2 is a pretty typical Samsung Windows Phone smartphone: it has a 4-inch, Super AMOLED WVGA display, plastic construction, and a 5 megapixel camera. Despite the plasticky feel, the Focus 2 is put together pretty well, and it fits nicely in the hand.

The Focus 2 is not a high-end smartphone like the Focus S from last year, but it is closer to the Focus Flash, which was an entry-level Windows Phone device.

At 10.98mm, the Focus 2 is not the thinnest phone on the market, but it's not obnoxiously thick either.

Under the hood, the Focus 2's 1.4GHz processor pushes Windows Phone 7.5 around without any trouble, and the interface is very quick. As we have seen with other Windows Phone smartphones with this processor, the native interface is very fast, but third-party apps still take a long time to load. The Internet Explorer 9 Mobile web browser was also impressively fast in our brief tests.

The new Focus 2 features a 5 megapixel main camera that can record 720p HD video, and also comes equipped with a VGA-resolution forward-facing camera for self portraits and Skype video chatting.

AT&T plans to launch the Focus 2 on May 20 for $49.99 with a new two-year contract. Though the Focus 2 isn't a high-end device by any means, it does provide a nice option for the entry-level customer, and it has LTE support to boot.
