Scarlett Johansson says trying to stop deepfakes is "a lost cause"

In brief: AI and machine learning offer humanity a number of benefits, but they can also be used for more nefarious purposes. One of these is “deepfake” videos, which involve someone’s face being edited onto the faces of actresses who appear in pornographic videos. One of the most popular Hollywood stars to be digitally added to these clips in Scarlett Johansson, but she says trying to stop them is a “lost cause.”

Back in December 2017, Motherboard highlighted the work of a Redditor called deepfakes who was creating these videos, which can appear quite realistic. They’ve since been banned by the likes of Discord, Twitter, and GIF-hosting platform Gfycat. Pornhub was supposed to have done the same thing, but they're still easily found on site. Moreover, they’ve now become more realistic while the software behind them is easier to use.

Speaking to the Washington Post, Johansson, who is Hollywood’s highest-paid actress, spoke out about the practice. The Avengers star appears in many of the videos, including one that has been viewed over 1.5 million times.

“Nothing can stop someone from cutting and pasting my image or anyone else’s onto a different body and making it look as eerily realistic as desired,” she said. “The fact is that trying to protect yourself from the Internet and its depravity is basically a lost cause [...] The Internet is a vast wormhole of darkness that eats itself.”

While most deepfake clips use images of stars such as Maisie Williams, Taylor Swift, Aubrey Plaza, and Gal Gadot, not every victim is a celebrity. A Washington Post story highlighted a woman in her 40s who’s likeness appears in a video, though it’s unclear why she was targeted.

While forensic tools have been developed by the Defense Department for catching deepfake videos and fake news created using the same techniques, it's still a legal grey area. Unlike The Fappening, which saw explicit photos of celebs including Johansson posted online, no personal data is stolen when creating the clips. Johansson also noted that different countries have different copyright laws, further complicating the matter.

I can't imagine how horrible it would be to have hundreds of dybbuks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dybbuk) spread across the internet and using my face.

So, what ever happened to the old philosophy of Hollywood that "any publicity is good publicity"?

Umm do you know the Celebs can make a dirty video and claim it was deepfake lol and no one would know for real lol

So.... queue all the people who didnt really know how good these deepfake videos are, and are now all searching for them online and faping to these actresses online. Way to go guys, news is great.
They all looked "dead" to me. Their faces were all looking unrealistic and made of plastic. I understand how someones "dreams" might come true one day with these, but they are not there yet at least.

Seriously, if you have seen one of these you know that this tech can not replicate a real face without looking ... looking somewhat fake. What I dont doubt is that it is possible to improve it to the point where only special software could recognize if it is a fake or not.

I think I'd like to see a deep fake explicit video of Taylor Swift, as long as she didn't try to sing or play one of those damned guitars

In fairness though, Taylor does OK on rhythm here, performing with Madonna on "Ghost Town". Well, at least until 3:05 when the song changes key to one unfamiliar to Swift, and she merely slaps her black stockinged thigh, right up to the conclusion.

OK, Madonna is doing the heavy lifting here on vocals, and I sincerely apologize in advance for the introduction by, "Iron Mike Tyson", who doesn't let his speech impediments get in the way of him not being able to read a cue card...

For those of you familiar with guitar, take notice. Ms Swift can't pull off a full Bm barre chord, so she treats us to the "student version". on the top four strings..

When I need the latest and most informed opinion on politics or technology, I look to Scarlett Johansson

I must say, Scarlett Johansson's expert opinions really highlight her many contributions to modern AI and embedded system architecture.

Who would you trust more, BGR? CNN?
Their talking heads are most likely already deep fakes....;)

Come to think of it, they could use that as their advertising slogans.

"Our devoted deep fake newscasters bring you all the fake news that's fit to fabricate". (y) (Y)

Conspiracy: Celebs created deep fake for this very reason. (Not like they don't have the money to pull something like this off) (pun intended).
