==== End Of File ===========================

Welcome to TechSpot! I'll help with the redirect!

I didn't even realize until today that FF 6 was out! And now I have 2 threads going with it! Some people think that new always means better- it doesn't. You might want to check this review:
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/software/3298112/mozilla-firefox-6-review/

Please uninstall or disable Bit Torrent and any other file sharing programs while I'm helping you. They are a straight road to malware.
============================
There are 2 way out of date Java versions. These are vulnerabilities to the system. Please update now to v6u26: Java Updates Uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 17 &Java(TM) 6 Update 7 in Add/Remove Programs as they are vulnerabilities for the system.
Note: Uncheck 'Install Yahoo Toolbar' on the download screen before you do the update.
=====================================
You will have malware in the Java cache because of the old version running. The cache must be emptied:
To clear the Java Plug-in cache:

  • [1]. Click Start > Control Panel.
    [2]. Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
    java.png
    The Java Control Panel appears.
    plugin_cache1.jpg

    [3].Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache2.jpg

    [4] Click Delete Files.The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache3.jpg

    [5]. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
    Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
    [6]. Click Apply> OK on Temporary Files Settings window.

Please remove these from the Trusted Zone immediately. The security in that zone is lower and you have the entire internet as trusted!
Trusted Zone: internet
Trusted Zone: mcafee.com
Nothing need to be in that zone.

==============================================
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
    [o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
    [o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
    [o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
  • Please let me know if there is any change in the system.

If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.

Please go on to next reply.

You have numerous locked Registry entries with Winlogon\GPExtensions and Winlogon\notify settings. I'm going to check some of them.
=====================
Did you update Java and remove the outdated version?

I had some trouble with this. The first time I ran it it stalled on me. I left it alone for several hours but eventually I had to stop it and retry after a reboot. I also seem to have some broken file associations now. Specifically .exe files. I have uninstalled java and installed the newest version. I will work on the combofix next.

I'm getting an error with combofix: "CFScript Name Error" it says "Were you trying to run CFScript? The name, CFScript appears to be incorrectly spelt." Before this error it said there was a newer version of combofix and asked if I wanted to download. I clicked yes. Should I go back the the older version?

This is just due to ComboFix not running properly thru to completion.

You can fix your clock from Control Panel ->Regional and Language Options and then on the Regional Options tab click the Customize button then on the next form click the Time tab. Then change the Time format to what you want. It explains there what the lower case and upper case letters will do. Upper case H is giving you 24 hour clock settings.

ComboFix 11-08-19.02 - Travis 08/20/2011 13:39:41.1.2 - x86>>> This is Military Time. Use the lower case h.

Once adjusted, you might have to reboot. Then try the scan again. If the Combofix version to changed to is now in the wrong time zone, I'll have you remove, then reinstall. But the script should still be good.

Please let me know if the time setting went well and if any other error occurs with Combofix. Be sure to let it run to completion.

Still getting the error. My setting was already on the 'h'. I tried the 'H' and didn't work. I switched back to 'h' and rebooted, still got the error. I also deleted combofix and re-downloaded from your previous link. Still no dice.

Look at the time on the computer clock. Is it the 12 hours clock time or the 24 hour military time?

You didn't have a problem running this, right?

This should have been downloaded to you desktop. It should be in it's own directory C:\Combofix.exe. When you double click on that, the scan runs and should then produce the log on your desktop as C:\ComboFix.txt

This ran in military time: 13:39:41. This is 1:39PM

Use this to properly uninstall Combofix:

Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

That should remove the logs and backups.

Try downloading again and be sure to use the link in the directions. I can set up the script again if needed- don't retry that until we get a new Combofix on board.
.

Clock is the same as it has been the whole time. I didn't get the option to choose the download location so I just ran it from where firefox downloaded it. Is that why it didn't work? I uninstalled combofix, downloaded from your link (and moved the file to the desktop before running). Here is the new log. OK to try the script now?

Yes, go ahead and run the script. It will generate a new Combofix log and if needed, I can write script again.

A comment on this for the future:
and moved the file to the desktop before running)
Each browser lets you choose the default download location. The ideal location for most is the Desktop
1. A files is easier to find on the Desktop
2. A file can be more easily deleted from the Desktop
3. A file can be moved to a different location using a right click> Send To:

Open the browser> Usually to Tools> Options> Look for the Download Default section- depending on the browser: In IE, you will want to find the tab below:
14.jpg

(I see someone else has a spelling problem! It should read 'IE Downloads.')

Click on Browse> Click on Desktop> Apply> OK.
Now when you download and choose Save, it will automatically go to the Desktop

If you want to save a file, not these download setup, the File> Save As> will show Save In at the top and you can then choose the location yourself.

I can't imagine what I'm doing wrong. I am still getting the same error. First it tells me there is an update available. I click no and the error pops up "CFScript Name Error".

I have copied the script over to make sure I didn't omit anything. I have it saved in notepad with wordwrap turned off. I drag the .txt file and drop it onto combofix. That's it right?

That's it!

I wanted to that there re many registry entries, each with Group Policy settings. Are you aware of these?

I'm not sure what that means, but I may have discovered the problem. Someone else tried to fix the broken file extension for .exe files (which didn't work) and probably made changes to the registry.

So you are not aware of the Group Policy Settings? I can't imagine anyone working on the file extension would make all these policies!

Here's a listing of some of the policies. It's on a different system, but it identifies some of them. You need to be aware of these settings because basically they are telling the system how to do what and when!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216357

And here is some description of Group Policy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_Policy>>
Simply said: "Group Policy is a set of rules which control the working environment of user accounts and computer accounts. Group Policy provides the centralized management and configuration of operating systems, applications and users' settings in an Active Directory environment.

For instance, this Stores configuration data for the policy setting Disk Quota policy processing.>>
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions\{3610eda5-77ef-11d2-8dc5-00c04fa31a66}][/b[ and each is followed by a function

And each of these is set through a locked Registry key.

No idea how those got there, but based on the description I don't think I need them on this computer. Regarding the file extensions. . I thought that might be why combofix isn't working for me. Could an antivirus program have created those group policies?

Just checking in. Went 4 days without power post hurricane and didn't know if I missed any more instructions. Any Ideas on how to get that script to work in combofix?

Can you please give me an update on the system.

Antivirus program didn't create the Group Policy settings. I don't know what did.

You ran Combofix okay_ that was an exe file. The script should have been saved as C:\ComboFix.txt

Please check the script file and make sure it's named correctly. If it is note, ro a right click on the file> rename> change to C:\ComboFix.txt
