What just happened? Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the once-infamous dark web drug marketplace Silk Road, has been given a full pardon by President Donald Trump. Ulbricht, 40, had been serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole since being sentenced in 2015, and has been behind bars since 2013.

In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump wrote, "The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous."

Trump said he called Ulbricht's mother to let her know that he was signing the pardon in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which he said had supported the president strongly.

"Ross Ulbricht has been a libertarian political prisoner for more than a decade. I'm proud to say that saving his life has been one of our top priorities and that has finally paid off," said Angela McArdle, the chair of the Libertarian National Committee.

Launched in February 2011, Silk Road, which used the Tor network, grew into an enormous drug market worth $1.2 billion. Its size and the money it generated, via Bitcoin payments, put Silk Road on the radar of law enforcement, which began a search to uncover The Dread Pirate Roberts's identity. The name – taken from The Princess Bride book/movie – was used by Ulbricht while running his business empire.

Prosecutors said Ulbricht collected $18 million in Bitcoin through commissions during the three years he ran Silk Road. It's estimated that around 30% of the marketplace's one million registered users were based in the US.

Ulbricht was caught in 2013 and charged with computer fraud, money laundering, and drug offenses. He was also accused of hiring people to kill five Silk Road users for stealing from the site and trying to blackmail him by revealing his true identity, but no evidence of murders was found. Ulbricht was convicted after a four-week jury trial.

In November, a few days after Trump was elected president, Ulbricht posted a message on X that he dictated to his wife from prison.

"Immense gratitude to everyone who voted for President Trump on my behalf. I trust him to honor his pledge and give me a second chance," it read.

It's unclear exactly when Ulbricht will be released from the federal prison in Arizona where he is currently incarcerated.

In 2020, near the end of his first term in office, it was reported that Trump could pardon Ulbricht before departing the White House. Sources said that Trump reviewed documents related to Ulbricht's case and expressed sympathy for his situation. Trump did pardon 73 people and commute the sentences of another 70 as one of his final acts, but Ulbricht was not among them.

Luigi is next

Seems like he can't (or perhaps unlikely), a comment from Quora:

If Luigi faces any federal charges for the assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which he is, then Trump can do that when he becomes President, but only for the federal charges. However, one of the charges is “second-degree murder as an act of terrorism.”

Luigi faces a terrorism charge. This makes Trump highly unlikely to pardon him. If he did that, JD Vance and the other Cabinet members have a political liability in a Presidential bid in 2028, a liability that could cost Republicans the White House and hurt the MAGA movement, because of what it would mean for their “tough on crime” branding.

He should rot in jail. I don't care who the president is.

How can you speak out against crime and drug dealers but contradictorily release someone who supported it?

Probably his son asking dad to pardon his dealer before said dealer starts talking to the press about what he knows. Remember the problems Hunter Biden caused Joe Biden, the orange dude doesn't want any of those.

I would like to have read how the special prosecutor Jack Smith or any other offending officials who persecuted Trump were the same individuals who investigated, searched, arrested, prosecuted, convicted and sentenced Ross Ulbricht.

Two life sentences and 40 years for managing a billion-dollar plus drug operation is about what one would expect for two capital crimes and a bank robbery. Let's admit that there were no capital crimes, but let's ask if other crimes carry life sentences and compare their gravity to that of managing a billion-dollar plus drug operation. Were the sentences levied against Ross Ulbricht actually ridiculous? A "study reports that 3,278 individuals are serving life sentences in U.S. prisons without the possibility of parole. Of this number, approximately 79 percent were convicted of a nonviolent drug-related crime." (Quoted from an ACLU document.)

I don't care that Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht. Our courts and prison systems are often criminal themselves, even to the point of just conducting 'business as usual.' If Ross Ulbricht got a break, great, but it would be nice if Trump were to just pardon everyone, right?

Trump's justifications for pardoning Ross Ulbricht don't add up, and it makes me wonder what Trump's real reasons might have been? Political favors are an oldy but goldy, and that may just be it. However, given the Biden administration's political prosecutions and mass pardons for family, friends and cohorts who may have committed crimes, this pardon may simply be Trump flipping a bird. I'm going to go with the bird mixed with some political favors being returned.

He needs to pardon his friend for 15 years , travelling buddy, travelling in each others jets Epstein
Hanging out often with teenage girls together

Remember someone trying to tell me The USA was not a banana republic

Good news with brown/black people getting deported - you will be able to get the banana bending jobs - they don't bend themselves

Cut health education funding , cut environment protection agencies , stop monitoring pollution - hell best figures ever

drill baby drill , those coal stations won't breathe themselves , ah the maga days when gas fumes , and unburnt octanes filled the streets and uppity people knew their place
Thankfully the new science depart has declared on serious study only 2 genders

If anything, these pardons should reconcile Biden's and Trump's fans. After all, they are doing the same thing.
Makes no sense. Biden didn't pardon convicted or even charged people. He protected people doing their job from political witch hunts.

Its objective fact Trump is a legitimately convicted felon. He HELPED PICK THE JURY. AMERICANS convicted him.

You can't accept this basic fact says a lot about your sincerity on the balance of the sides.

Biden did pardon several murderers. Trump knows what murder and morality is. Democrats don't
You sound like a blind Trump supporter. The man and his wife are pushing out scam coins right now to get themselves rich. It doesn't get more immoral and corrupt than this.

Trump would have pardoned Jeffrey Dahmer, if he were alive.

The new president doesn't burden himself with morality. After all, he is the most immoral president in the history of the US.
Yet, he was voted in. What does that tell you? You have to be more leery of those who voted him in - the majority.

You read too much "biased" news. And let me guess, Biden is the moral one that should have been elected...no wait Kamala? Talk about blind.

🤣🤣

You do realize more non left leaning dems voted for Trump right?

Lets see...
Joe Biden NW 10M
Jill Biden NW 86M
Hunter Biden NW 230M

Yeah, Joes has morality, so does Jill and Hunter.

And he pardoned everyone in his family....lol

Another highly amusing political subject!
:joy:
It is much too soon to speculate about what our newly inaugurated President will or will not do. Give it at least a week.

I'm glad to see Ross free. The police and prosecution failed to adhere to the law and the sentencing appears unjust.

11 years in jail for making an illegal website seems like a lot already. I don't see the pardon as unethical.
