Some Amazon Prime deliveries are facing month-long delays

What just happened? The coronavirus crisis is affecting virtually everything, including Amazon Prime deliveries. Instead of the usual delivery time of one or two days, people in the US will be waiting up to a month for certain non-essential items.

As reported by Recode, Yesterday saw several Amazon merchants and customers post on social media that many items were showing April 21 delivery dates, despite being in stock and shipping with Amazon Prime in the US.

Some non-essential items were showing five-day delivery times, but others were as long as a month. Amazon has confirmed the delays are due it ensuring high-priority items reach customers as quickly as possible.

In a statement to Recode, the tech giant said: “To serve our customers in need while also helping to ensure the safety of our associates, we’ve changed our logistics, transportation, supply chain, purchasing, and third-party seller processes to prioritize stocking and delivering items that are a higher priority for our customers. This has resulted in some of our delivery promises being longer than usual.”

Last week, Amazon announced that it would be prioritizing high-demand items by temporarily suspending non-essential products sold through Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). It means the FBA program, which lets third parties use Amazon’s shipping and logistics network, has temporarily stopped sellers from shipping anything that falls outside the following categories:

  • Baby Products
  • Health & Household
  • Beauty & Personal Care (including personal care appliances)
  • Grocery
  • Industrial & Scientific
  • Pet Supplies

Amazon is also hiring 100,000 warehouse and delivery workers to meet demand in the US, as people stuck indoors turn to online shopping for their essentials.

And some are arriving well ahead of the projected arrival date! I got one yesterday that was supposed to take three weeks, but took only two days ..... go figure!

I wouldn't be surprised if they just built fat into the algorithm that predicts delivery dates for non-essential items, just to discourage 'bored at home' buying. They probably still are prioritizing the essential items when they place orders in the queues of Amazon pickers, but I doubt they are completely ignoring the non-essential items as well.

Any chance on Amazon giving prime members a free month for this though. I get a free month anytime I ask why a 2 day shipment took 4 days.

Amazon has a long history of waiting an entire WEEK before even putting my order in a box. This is even when I had the Prime trial... Add in that they now charge sales tax for out-of-state purchases and I rarely buy from them. I am not going to pay both shipping AND tax for junk. Maybe 1-2 orders a year, if that. I even spent hours of my time reporting a fraudulent seller on their web page and they treated me like dirt - like I was the crook. Not even a thank you. Why would anyone order from this company?

Oh wait, apparently we are supposed to say something positive... I'm glad they are prioritizing shipments.

I ordered a T shirt 2 weeks ago and yesterday I ordered mask that are needed and they have yet to be delivered. They are far more essential than the T shirt. I’m a nurse and need the mask I ordered via my prime account.
