Sony will stop making physical PlayStation games starting in 2028

Its not about welcoming or anything else, its happening no matter what. Companies are going forward, digital is becoming the future, which has been known for a while.
Again… just cause it’s happening, doesn’t mean we have to like or encourage it.
I personally dont care. I dont use my bluray player, havent in years. Only been using streaming for about 2 years. I use my pc for watching streams. TVs sometimes but not all that often. Ive had prime for almost a decade and never streamed any movies till 2024. Wasnt a thing I did till then but I used my pc not my tv. I have since got newer TVs that can do streaming much better but I like using my pc better.
Streaming is fine for most - for TV, it’s fine… but if you want a true movie experience, you can’t beat physical media.

Wonder what will happen if Xbox commits to discs
Impossible, too much money to earn from digital only.
I wish there was a new gamestore that would allow an x
amount of games to be traded for other games with other
platform accounts. It could explode the industry.
WHAAAAT? digital games can be shared omg!!!!!!!!!!!
Would be a breath of fresh air.

OK guys, I am not happy too but we all know the statistics of the last couple of years and that 85% of the purchases were digital. It seems the majority of gamers wants it that way anyway. This would not have happened if the stats were reversed. This part of our community is to blame not Sony.

That figure is misleading, that figure is all game revenue so it includes DLC, season passes and micro-transactions, as well as game genres like multiplayer and indie games where people are more receptive to the digital option, It also doesn't include second hand sales. When it comes to single player AAA games the physical share is still way higher than 15%.

From this article, 45% of Hogwarts Legacy’s sales, 49% of Assassin’s Creed Mirage sales and 45% of Resident Evil 4 Remake sales were physical in the UK. Meanwhile, Spider-Man 2 was bought more via physical retailers than digital ones (54% physical), although that does include console bundles. Astro Bot on PlayStation 5, was 55% physical in the UK and nearly 60% physical across Europe.

This is understandable but I am not a fan., unless they actually keep servers alive for much longer. Right now, they for sure will close servers after xx years. Just look at PS3 right now, access to PS Store closes september this year, IIRC.

You probably can't do much, going full digital makes alot of sense. PC did that many years ago. Making physical discs is kinda stupid when you think about it, however if your internet is crap then you are mostly screwed. Tons of games requires massive downloads even today. Some "physical" games just gives you a key.

Sony should copy MIcrosoft, where you probably is going to be able to link your physical media with your account for a license key.

If PS6 and the PS6 handheld will play PS4 and PS5 games, they need to do something, as many have physical copies.

Discs are the least of their concerns at the moment. Soon they'll need to decide if they can continue producing playstations.

There’s more money to be made in clawing back market share

They don’t track trade ins though. For example if I wanted to play Spider-Man 2 I could buy it used, 100% the game and then trade it back in

Ok so definitively my good ol' Slim PS4 is my last console ever.

The PC (including the ROG Ally for its mobility) has always been my main platform and that will never change it seems.
I just need to use GOG even more, and less Steam, to progressively actually own my games.

Really I have no partnership with them and I won't gain a penny if you use their store, but let's face it.
GOG is the only way to have the best of all worlds.
Buy the game, own it. Immediately download an offline setup for the platform of your choice.
A friend of you wants to discover the game ? There is no DRM that would prevent him/her to install it.
Go back later on the site to get an updated version of the setup if there is a patch ; or for a more modern experience, use a launcher like GOG Galaxy or Heroic to download the updates for you.
