I just Installed an updated driver. realtek ac97. Latest version. soundman reports no sound device. device manager says all Is regonized, & working properly. dxdiag reports this >>> direct sound test resultsdirectsoundcreate): hresult =0x88780078(no driver). so what can I do to get sound????

In device manager, right click on the sound device and uninstall it. Then reboot your system and let windows find it on its own. If this doesn't work, uninstall it again and then run the install software again and see if it detects it.
