Let me explain - the usual approach would be to connect SteamBox via your home theatre system. In order to get surround sound (read: 5.1 audio), the sound card on the SteamBox needs to output Dolby Digital Live. I don't know of any onboard mobo sound processors that do this.

Therefore, unless proven otherwise, we can assume that SteamBox will have stereo sound only.
