Stuck at XP load screen, stops during driver loading

My brother's computer that I built for him a year ago recently started acting up. It now will not progress past the Windows XP loading screen with the blue loading bar. If I try to boot it in safe mode, when all the drivers are listed on the screen (which I assume are the ones being loaded) it stops with "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys" being the last listing shown. So I need a way to make it boot somehow or figure out what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

P.S. I tried booting with no USB devices plugged in (a suggestion I saw on another post) but to no avail :(

This sounds like you have a corrupt file in your hard drive.

Check out your bios setup to make sure everything is ok.

Reboot your computer with an XP installation CD, then open the recovery console. Run Chkdsk/p then try to reboot. If that doesn't work then try Chkdsk/r.

Also, check your Ram.

Good Luck
