System hangs up after login, while loading desktop in Vista

hi guys. my system is hanging alot and just wont get out of the loading state after i log in. it passes the blue welcome screen and SLOWLY shows my desktop which, after more loading, ends up becoming non responsive (gets the gray overlay to show it). nothing responds.

safemode boots perfectly fine (im on it now). not the slightest slow down. ive removed all my usual startup applications but still get the problem. virus scan is nearly complete but no virus's in sight. (microsoft security essentials).

NOTE: i removed the entries for internet explorers home page,etc etc as they contained URL's (i cant post urls.). they where all safe - all default microsoft website links.
