Tech Tip: Check if Adobe Flash is installed, then get rid of it

This is dumb, to do this now, do to many sites are still using Flash! If we are to get rid of it, then at lest tell us of a program that works in the place of Flash and does just the same, but better. Heck I am not getting rid of Flash anytime soon. next they will be telling us to get rid of Direct X.

Put it this way, I updated Adobe Flash just a week or so ago. Because of the very software this forum (as well as a few others) runs on was telling me Flash had been disabled and needs upgrading. Now tell me if a site didn't use Flash, why would it prompt to upgrade?

For those that need Flash for certain sites, my solution in Firefox is this:

1. install Flash normally
2. in Firefox, get the extension called "Flash Disable"
3. go into Customize and put the Flash Disable button on your toolbar
4. click said button to disable Flash globally. the button will grey out
5. when you need Flash on a site, just click the button and it will instantly enable Flash. when done, just click it again to disable flash globally again.

It's a simple solution that makes it really easy to toggle Flash off and on extremely quickly.

The funniest thing about this article is the banner I have at the top of Firefox asking: Allow https://www.techspot.com to run "Adobe Flash"? I mean seriously, posting about eliminating a program on a site that is using that program seems a little odd.

No, I think I will continue blocking. That method seems to work for me. Have it ask every time. If I need it for a site I know I can enable it.

Flash is an anathema, not because of the function it provides but in the pernicious manner Adobe forces it down your throat. Flash lost its glory and promise when Macromedia sold it to Adobe.

My solution for using Flash as needed has been relatively simple: When I'm in Firefox and I encounter a video I need to see, I open Chrome and view it in that browser. Chrome incorporates Flash by default so there is no need to have it installed anywhere on your computer. Google/Chrome can address all the Flash bugs and hassles than any of us can.

No such Button in FF 42?

Problem here is that with windows 10 you can not exactly get rid of flash... it's kind of inbuilt into the OS with edge... and if you forcibly remove it, by deleting the files, you break windows update...

Hold it right there buddy!!! Did you just discover a way to prevent auto updates!???!??!?!?!? :D
You would, if you could, disable all windows updates?

I'd love to get rid of Flash entirely but it's still too early. It's still used too much on the internet to get rid of it entirely, at least for me it is. Even just watching youtube is affected cause you can't get the same quality vids on HTML 5 as with Flash. I have a feeling Flash isn't going anywhere any time soon. Similar to Microsoft still not ditching their 32 bit OS. Some things just linger around way too damn long.

Why would I want to get rid of Flash? I play a lot of games online. And most all of the Facebook games are flash based. Not to mention a lot of video are flash based. When all that is replaced with something better I will consider it.

Even more importantly....REMOVE ALL TRACES OF SUN JAVA! By far, Java has caused more problems on PC's with malware and viruses than anything known to man.

I remember visiting the Eye4U website back in 200? to watch their Flashology, however I hoped that flash would not become popular due to the constant Adobe updates. I would love to remove Flash but it has spread like a virus...it will be some time yet before we have a decent and stable universal replacement.

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since 2015 !
In the mean time Adobe has fixed 99.999999% of any issues.
I have never UN-installed Adobe Flash Player whilst I listened to all the hype.
Have fun in the mean time.

Some will note that HTML5 has yet to reach 100% adoption and thus is still prevalent on various websites -- this is true. Just like the normal secure setup is to never access websites as Admin or to run without a firewall, your PC is best protected by disabling Flash and not accessing websites that still require it -- especially where the site prompts you to download a new Flash Player. Of course it's YOUR system and you get to choose what to install and/or access -- just know that you were forewarned of the possible outcome.
