Technophobe! Compaq laptop shift key not working

Hi,
I'm not brilliant with technology: I have a HP Compaq laptop model NC6220 & the shift key has decided not to work. If I hold down the shift key to get an exclamation mark ! I get the number 1. Can anyone help please? Thanks Jenny
