TechSpot IRC Channel: #3dspotlight on irc.starchat.net

Our member list has become a bit stagnant recently. Would be cool to have some fresh faces come in and hang out for a while.

Hi Folks, I'm new here. Have a OX 6.8 and can't get into IRC Starchat. I can get to the rooms/log in info but never get actually connected. It all stopped about 2 months ago. Those rooms are mostly old people but I am too and really want to see/chat a bit. If you can help I'd appreciated it. I tried Colloquy but that doesn't do it. I think I've tried all the clients that this mac can use. I know there is a genius out there... We ARE...

Use X-Chat Azure for OS X, its free. I use it and it works great. IMO it is the best OS X IRC client. I have used Colloquy and did use it for years, but I liked X-Chat Azure better. Alternatively, Adium is a fantastic all around client (multiple IM protocols) and will also do IRC.

Well I'm just interested and wondering if anyone uses this anymore? Also when I try to load it, it says I have an application blocked?

When I click details, I get this

About getting into www.starchat.net.... I get a message "Your security settings have blocked an application signed with an expired or not-yet-valid Certificate from running.
How the heck can I find that certifcate and trash it or how can I get into chat. I have xChat Azure but it isn't connecting. Help and thanks

I now have a mac OSX 10.9.3 if that is of use.

@TheDreams and @Beads - I would bet that starchat's java interface hasn't been updated in years and therefore you get a security issue. IMO you shouldn't even have Java on your machine unless you absolutely have to use it for something (my bank does check scanning with Java for example).

Beads - can you screenshot your connect options for x-chat azure? I use that on 10.9.3 at home. If I don't notice (or someone else) anything immediately obvious then I will post what mine are (although maybe not tonight).

Thank you, I never did a screenshot before and hope this is ok and just tell me if I should do it differently... oh we learn something new every day. I know chat isn't safe and I only want to get into a room of old folks ... whine whine..

@Beads you got real close, needed to see the server details. This should be able to get you there:

If yours looks like that and you aren't able to connect, what messages are you getting in the server frame of the chat window? For example mine says:
Code:
[16:02:52] * Looking up tahoma.starchat.net

[16:02:56] * Connecting to irc.starchat.net (208.111.39.43) port 6667...

[16:02:56] * Connected. Now logging in...

[16:02:56] * *** Looking up your hostname...

[16:02:56] * *** Found your hostname

[16:02:56] * *** If you need assistance with connecting to this server, Lairds.CA.US.StarChat.Net, please refer to: http://www.starchat.net/connect.html

Hope this is the right shot(s). It tries to connect but just never is able to.
Thanks in advance.

Also, here is a screen shot of what the details are when I try to go to starchat the regular way thru Java chat....

The java chat is not the 'regular' way, its just for people that didn't want to install a real IRC client.

Your screenshots look good, everything as far as I can see is proper. It has to be a software firewall or your router blocking that port. You will want 6667-6669 open at least.

ok got it, and how do I open the firewall or router. I think the router is from Verizon and they told me they weren't blocking anything. Thanks for helping me.
Oh I see I can turn off the firewall but is it dangerous to turn off the firewall?? thanks

Violating one of my own rules here... There is significant discussion in the IRC channel now about several of us coming back. I'll repost here, or you'll just see more activity on the forums from a few names.

Only runs on a Windows operating system, you might be able to find a workaround with macs bootcamp feature or wine. I'm not very knowledgeable about mac's sorry

Yes, thank you at least I thought I would ask... wouldn't its be cool to be able to use it not just on Mac but your iPhone? That's crazy good, I would.
