TechSpot PC Buying Guide: Holidays 2015 Update

Only 2 Titan X cards.... come on, at least give us 3 :)
Well I figure 2 can render all those resolutions fine, 3 tends to only give a 30% boost, maybe if the game can pick up the 3rd card, also I would create a custom loop so you don't have radiators going everywhere

Agreed... I do love my triple Titan X machine though.... and yes, custom water cooling is the way to go - I used EKWB :)

Yeah... but I couldn't get a 4th Titan on the Asus Rampage V Extreme, cause I put an Intel 750 PCIE inside... Really annoyed me to find out that you CANNOT use the m2 adapter Asus sells for it if you're using 3 Titans, as it forces one up (bad design!!!)... Which means I had to take out the USB3.1 addon card that comes with the motherboard in order to make it work... Not especially important, but it irks me that I have a 3.1 PCI card just collecting dust in a box...

Had the Samsung 950 been available when I built my machine (this was in June), I might have been saved a lot of grief...down the line, might decide to get myself one and sell the Intel to someone else...

You mention the i5 -6600k has hyper threading (8 threads). It doesn't from the reviews I read. Only the i7 has hyper threading. So the i5 just has 4 cores which equals 4 threads.

Big thank you to author (and TechSpot in general), such an excellent article, so many links to read more in-depth about the kit mentioned.

Is it really necessary to add peripherals to the system price, like monitor, speakers, mouse and keyboard? Do you really buy new ones every time you build a new computer?

To me they seem more like perfect items to buy in-between builds ... safe upgrade paths that usually never break any existing systems. New speakers and amplifiers and stuff are more like computer "real estate" that you buy for life. mouse and keyboard are more like ... pants and shoes... you buy new ones when the old ones break or become unusable.

I am a first time builder and I have a couple different build lists in mind that I may mash together so I like the article my issue is with the price you have...when I add it all up (core system) it comes to $663...just saying you may want to double check your math.

Prices change quite a bit day to day and week to week... you started building far later than this article was posted - and prices tend to go up right before the holidays, despite the "sales" that are announced...

Feel free to link us.... FYI Asrock make some of the best boards out there now.
In the reviews right here the gigabyte g1 wifi and msi 9ac both got 94's as opposed to the 85 the asrock got, even the asus 8 hero got 91 and the gygabyte soc got 89, any would be better than a board that only scored 85.
Personally I'd think quad sli would be better than tri.

The MSI is almost triple the price though.... and the ASRock DOES support quad-SLI... I prefer the Asus Rampage 5 Extreme myself - but I understand it's more expensive, and might not be for everyone...

Its an 8,000.00+ computer that says, "The Extreme Machine isn't governed by a budget as we simply pick the best hardware and disregard the associated price premium.", so price isn't an issue. I didn't notice the 4th slot, mea culpa. I guess that just leaves the fact that it is a lower rated board. That's all I was saying.

Well you asked for a link to the information, I provided it and you seemed to lose interest.
I guess it's what I expected.

I never had any interest in this conversation to begin with if I am honest, you lost me with your first comment which attacked Asrock without any evidence or factual information.

Then you go on to link the wrong motherboard, we recommended the Asrock X99 WS-E/10G, the most extreme X99 motherboard out there...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627 600533617&IsNodeId=1&Description=X99&name=Intel Motherboards&Order=PRICED&Pagesize=30&isdeptsrh=1

From the article....

"What qualifies the X99 WS-E/10G other than the price tag you ask? How about support for 128GB DDR4 memory, seven PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, a dozen SATA 6Gb/s ports and don’t forget the Intel X540 network controller for dual 10G Base-T LAN support."

The MSI Gaming X99A GODlike Gaming and Asus X99-Deluxe/U3.1 are also nice boards but neither offer 10G Base-T LAN support out of the box. The Gigabyte GA-X99-SOC Champion is a budget motherboard in comparison.

But it got lower scores from the reviews than a lot of others. There are better ones out there, that was the point. You forgot all about the 170 boards and skylake chips?

You weren’t even comparing the RIGHT BOARD! Also I pick the hardware based on my experience, not other reviews. There aren’t better ones out there, the X99 WS-E/10G is the most extreme X99 motherboard on the market and it offers all the best features.

I am having a really hard time staying in this conversation, what are you even talking about?

I am talking about this: "The Extreme Machine isn't governed by a budget as we simply pick the best hardware and disregard the associated price premium. If it's 'extreme' enough then you'll find it in this build."
What are you talking about?
I missed where it said the best x99 system. I'll read it again.

nope, still not seeing that part.

Why use a crappy 512gb ssd? why not toss in this:
shopping

Sandisk Fusion-io ioMemory SX300 Atomic Series 6400 - Solid state drive - 6.4 TB - internal - PCI Express 2.0 x8 - SDFACCMOS-6T40-SF1

Why not add 4 1tb ssd's in raid?

etc.etc.

If you read the ENTIRE article, you'll note that parts were still selected on some basis of fiscal responsibility - the video card, for instance, is the 980Ti instead of the Titan X...

When you come 3 months late (this was written Nov 30, dude!), it's hard to be nitpicky about trivial differences - once your motherboard hits the 300-400 range, it's pretty hard to go wrong...

When you're going insanely extreme, it's easy to build a computer that's $50,000... but we wouldn't really be interested... $8,000 is still within the means of some people - or at least within their hoped for means - and thus makes for a better read.

If you want crazy - just go to one of the built-it-yourself websites and just click on "maximum" for everything.... if you want interesting... read this article :)

I have done that and I can build a dream system for 25,000.00 chump change. :)

It says in the description "isn't governed by a budget" but I guess they didn't stick to that so why leave it in?

I didn't write it... but at least I understand it - something you apparently didn't... oh well...

You understand 'isn't governed by a budget' to mean it is governed by a budget? Then I don't understand, where I come from you say what you mean and do what you say. I am old fashioned that way. They could easily have said up to 10,000, 20,000 or any number, they said no limit.
