TechSpot readers, would you pay $3-5 for a subscription, remove all ads, and...

I would happily pay, but not $3/month. $10/year would be about right if ads go away and RSS is full content.

My 2 cents: Leave an option for people to donate, with recurring options.

To ask for a membership to a news site... for a forum badge and no adds (Which you can get by using addons like ABP) you need to really give it a second thought.

I don't mind helping to pay $3, but the thought of having to pay for every tech site that I frequent makes it troublesome. I rather deal with the ads, which clearly target the right audience. The ads never bug me and have provided me with some good product information in the past.

I would not mind paying to read on the net. What I don't want is a bunch of subscriptions.

My thought -- how about we pay into a bucket, a common subscription -- and then 'turn on or off' access to each individual site as we please.

Would work for me.

Nope, sorry

I stopped going to tweaktown after they started nagging about disabling abp and doing it every time I load a page on their site.
(I load +-90 websites and submit the stories to reddit in my little sub, not using abp would kill my compi)

An other site that did what you are considering is semi accurate, the "interesting" mostly Charlie spinning his head 360 whilst vomiting abuse to nvidia/intel/ "insert other tech company name" is now behind a paywall if it ends up being accurate it will end up on other sites so I can't say I consider it a loss not paying for it.

I can understand why you would like to get an other source of revenue, but I'm afraid you are probably going to end up loosing readers if you change to much.

A donation button seems more appropriate. Most news sites are bending over backwards just to get people to click on them. But this site is more then just a news site. It also offers free computer help. The free computer repair advice is what originally brought me to this site. Now I just browse the news and offer advice when I need some help. While I wait for a response I go threw the forums and look for someone I can help.

The help offered on this site relies on generous people who help others with no benefit to themselves. An optional paid subscription is not really a terrible thing in and of itself. But then again I really like the website how it is and I don't think asking for more money to change the website is justifiable.

If the website was in danger of shutting down, yes that would be a valid reason to pitch an idea to come up with more scrap(money). But as is no it is not a good idea. Sadly having the option in a new users face to pay for a subscription to the site automatically makes them think they will get less out of this site if they do not pay. Less in ways of computer repair help. It will also make them think if they do not pay they might get advertisement spammed in front of what they are trying to look at every few clicks. Resulting in new users not completing registration.

Finally you need to offer waaaay more services for half the cost of netflix.

So the two paying options in your poll are $60 a yr and $36 a yr!! Both seem waaay to high for a digital "subscription" to this site. Compare this to a typical magazine subscription?? (Print or digital) Not very realistic.

Compare this to a typical magazine subscription??
Do people get personalized computer help for their machine, with a magazine subscription? I don't know, I do find it hard to believe this is being used as a comparison. Especially when you don't get a magazine, if you don't pay the subscription.

Whatever happens, definitely add a donate method (for me pref. PayPal instead of credit card)
