First look: The conversation about increasing smartphone screen sizes has mainly centered on phablets and foldables, but standard-sized phones have also grown over the years. A recent Kickstarter aims to gauge interest from users who want to reverse the trend with an Android device smaller than all but the tiniest currently supported iPhones.

The makers of the Sleke phone have launched a Kickstarter for a new model that packs its deliberately low-key feature set into a more compact form factor. Expected to ship in mid-2027, the device highlights how much smartphones have grown since Apple debuted the original iPhone nearly two decades ago.

Early iPhones measured just 3.5 inches with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution before gradually growing past the four-inch mark. Apple's first phablet, the iPhone 6 Plus, expanded to 5.5 inches, but later standard and phablet-sized phones outgrew it by shrinking the bezels.

The iPhone X, for example, reached 5.8 inches, while the iPhone 17 and 18 now sit at 6.3 inches, just two-tenths of an inch smaller than the iPhone 11 Pro Max and nearly twice as large as the original iPhone. However, Apple still supports a few models in the same ballpark as the Enough Phone's 5.3-inch screen: The iPhone 13 mini is just one-tenth of an inch bigger, at 5.4 inches, while the 3rd-generation iPhone SE is still only 4.7 inches.

However, the Enough Phone also targets users looking for an essentials-only smartphone experience wiFth fewer distractions. The phone comes with either a standard Android 17 installation or Sleke's Odyssey OS, an Android fork that supports only communication and utility apps, with pared-back browser functionality.

Measuring just 133 x 64 x 12mm with a 1,500 x 720 screen resolution and a matte finish, the Enough Phone features a MediaTek Dimensity 7500 processor, clocked at 2.4 GHz, a removable 3,500 mAh battery, 8GB of memory, 128GB of storage, and microSD card support. It includes a 50MP Sony IMX766 rear camera and a 32MP front camera that supports face unlock. The power button also supports fingerprint unlock. Software support is planned through 2032.

Pricing starts at $499, with shipments expected to begin in May 2027. However, the creators admit the Enough Phone is still undergoing product tooling, and working samples have yet to be produced. Some technical specs could change before mass production, which is set for April.

Supports is doing some heavy lifting here since the iPhone Mini 13 launched 5 years ago and it doesn’t get all of iOS current features.

I’m all for a resurgence of a normal sized phones. The do you want Large, Extra Large, or Foldable Tablet size is ridiculous. Until then I’ll keep my partially supported Mini.

Ah, they did the cutout camera on the screen instead of a bezel where they could load it up with convenience features (like a notification LED).

I hate this push to do the island (thanks Apple).

I think it's pretty expensive.
I'm not going to buy a smartphone in "new" condition until a very long time it seems.
Anyway the refurbished market suits me well.

Oh, and I too, miss the time when we could easily find normal-sized phones.
Today they are all huge.

I have to assume buyers wanting a small phone would choose from brands they already know. For this to work, the phone would have to have 80-90% of what small phone users have been asking for and not just a stubby slab phone.

The fact is, small phones went away because the majority of consumers bought phones with bigger and bigger screens every year.

My sweet spot is 6.4"

Small screens are not what people actually want, that's just a vocal minority, otherwise, iPhone mini would sell. And what's with "less distractions" angle? Smartphone IS a distraction tool, you can choose not to use it if it bothers you, but you won't.

They missed the chance to make something extraordinary

many ppl dont need data plan (internet at all) and all the fancy stuff included - free soft, games, tools you never use
camera? wtf...
as me, I need something to call and receive calls, thats enough

I'd pay a $100 for it.
I think $200-250 would be reasonable for a phone like this. But the article says "Pricing starts at $499" meaning you just get the lowest end version for that price. Get real. This will fail so hard. And yes, I know everyone is blaming high prices on the cost of RAM.

It almost seems like the RAM price debacle is actually the best thing that could've happened to these companies, because now they can just charge insane prices for hardware that needs RAM and simply point to the cost of that part. Sort of like when the Orange Retard's tariffs kicked in and everyone pre-emptively raised prices on their products and used the tariffs as an excuse.
