The Nvidia RTX 4070 looks set to arrive in April

Rumor mill: The next entry in Nvidia's powerful but wallet-crushing Ada Lovelace series, the RTX 4070, looks set to arrive this April. The tech giant has reportedly revealed to its partners plans for launching the card in two months, though it never confirmed a precise date.

VideoCardz writes that it attained embargo documents from Nvidia revealing release information for the RTX 4070. The embargo information is listed as To Be Determined (TBD), but the on-shelf date, which is the actual launch, is down as April.

The RTX 4070 is, of course, the recently released RTX 4070 Ti's (formerly the RTX 4080 12GB) little brother. Like its sibling, the card will likely be based on the AD104 GPU and pack 12GB of GDDR6X memory.

Being a less-powerful, non-Ti version means the RTX 4070's GPU will be cut down to 5,888 cuda cores and have speeds between 1,920 MHz and 2,475 MHz. The RTX 4070 Ti, for comparison, has 7,680 cuda cores and operates between 2,310 MHz and 2,610 MHz. As such, the upcoming card is predicted to offer 29 TFLOPs of maximum FP32 performance, down from the 40 TFLOPs found in the RTX 4070 Ti.

The reduced performance means the RTX 4070's power consumption is expected to be less than the Ti version: Its 200W total board power (TBP) is 85W lower than the most recent Lovelace entry.

That brings us to the all-important price. The RTX 4070 Ti launched with a $799 MSRP, though finding one at that price point isn't easy. As we noted in our review of the card, it should cost no more than $700. Nvidia has taken plenty of justifiable criticism for its pricing strategy for the Ada Lovelace series, so it will be interesting to see how much it has listened, if at all, when it comes to the RTX 4070. As a reminder, the RTX 3060 Ti launched with a $400 MSRP, while the vanilla RTX 3060 cost $330.

Following the RTX 4070 could be the RTX 4060. According to purported benchmarks, the latter card can go head-to-head with the RTX 3070 Ti in terms of performance. The Ampere equivalent of the RTX 4060 is flying up the Steam survey GPU charts, but Nvidia will need to price the successor competitively if it wants to repeat that success.

4070 - $699 (my guess) and will be around a 3080/3080Ti performance. (10-15% slower than the 4070Ti) Nvidia can't have the 4070 being too close to the 4070Ti performance otherwise folks will just ignore the 4070Ti and pay less for similar performance. That's why I see it being around the 3080/3080Ti performance and being priced $100 less.

Then you'll get all those super fanboys saying, "Same performance of the 3080Ti that cost $1100 for only $700! Awesome deal!"
Instead of them saying, "4070 is $200 more than the 3070 MSRP, what a ripoff!"

I wonder if it worth waiting 4070 or just take ref 3080Ti for 700-800$ right now. I really doubt it would par with AD102, maybe 3080/10 at best...

For a 285W and 192 bit, for this card the $700 tag it's hard to digest.

Possibly but probably not, as a 160-bit memory bus would result in 5 or 10GB of VRAM, and Nvidia will almost certainly keep it at 8GB.

I'm probably going to buy this, and this will be my last PC GPU at least for the rest of this decade. Still not sure whether to get this or a PS5. But I need more VRAM for my modded Skyrim, it uses over 8GB VRAM and that's all my current GPU has. I suppose I could turn down the textures, but the direction gaming is going I would need more VRAM anyway going forward.

It's weird, I expect the 4060 to offer performance around the 3070 Ti and cost around $300. 150 Watts would be icing on the cake. Something tells me I'll be disappointed though. It doesn't bother me missing yet another generation, I've got used to that now as I'm still on a 1060 6GB. Without a new graphics card, there's really no point in upgrading the rest of my system (3570K, 8GB). Which in turn means there's no point even looking to buy the latest games. On the plus side, I'm saving money.

Back when top end was 400$ I upgraded every gen, when it moved to 6-800$ I upgraded every other gen, now that we are looking at 9-1600$ it will be at least every 3rd.

Same here although I'm sticking with my 1660 Super. These prices are an absolute joke and everyone should be voting with their pocket and just not buying them.
