The United States no longer prioritizes Russia as a major cyber threat

A hot potato: Even before the invasion of Ukraine, the US had long considered Russia its main cybersecurity threat. But it appears that the designation no longer applies. The move comes as Trump attempts to normalize the relationship with Russia and President Putin, and follows a heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

According to a US official familiar with the matter (via The Record), new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered US Cyber Command to "stand down from all planning against Russia, including offensive digital actions."

The official said that Hegseth gave the order to the head of the command, Air Force Gen. Tim Haugh, in late February. The order does not apply to the National Security Agency, which Haugh also leads.

This is the second incident suggesting the US no longer considers Russia a cybersecurity threat. Last week, Liesyl Franz, deputy assistant secretary for international cybersecurity at the state department, said in a speech that the US was concerned about cyberthreats from some states, naming only China and Iran, not Russia.

The Guardian writes that a recent memo at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (Cisa) set out new priorities for the agency. While China was mentioned as a digital threat, there was no mention of Russia in the memo.

A source familiar with the matter told the publication that analysts at the agency were verbally informed not to follow or report on Russian threats, despite previously being a focus for the agency.

"Russia and China are our biggest adversaries. With all the cuts being made to different agencies, a lot of cybersecurity personnel have been fired. Our systems are not going to be protected and our adversaries know this," the person said.

"People are saying Russia is winning. Putin is on the inside now," they added.

A person who previously worked on US joint task forces tracking and combating Russian cyberthreats said Russia poses as possibly the most significant nation state threat actor. "Not to diminish the significance of China, Iran or North Korea, but Russia is at least on par with China as the most significant cyber threat," they said.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that Cisa remains committed to addressing all cyber threats to US critical infrastructure, including from Russia. "There has been no change in our posture or priority on this front," McLaughlin said.

There have been numerous instances of Russian-backed hackers attacking US infrastructure over the last few years. Last April, one such group targeted the water system of Muleshoe, north Texas. Experts believe this was a test to see just how vulnerable these types of targets are and how they respond following an attack.

In 2021, Microsoft warned that more than half of all nation-state cyberattacks came from Russia, and that Russian hackers succeed in one out of every three attacks.

One can only wonder what kind of kompromat the Kremlin is holding over our deputy President.
2 long years to go before our first shot at holding the make russia great again movement to account.
Hopefully we'll still have anything left worth saving at that point.

Ukraine resisted Putin for 3 years and counting. America folded to Putin in two weeks.
It sure helps when “the enemy from within” turns out to be Trump himself.
Peace with honour indeed! The honour of licking and shining Putin’s shoes.
Meanwhile China is winning without firing a single shot and without any effort. Why bother when the others are doing all the dirty, messy work themselves?
Keep on winning America!!! Oops… I meant to say Trumpistan.

Called it .. trump on his knees to putin to get access to resources needed by the boondoggle CHIPS ACT... which STILL needs CHINA silicon to function

Good job team red, you pimped your meat-puppet on the street corner to hostile nations only to still be slaves. If you don't have 2.5 million after taxes in cash you can touch right now.. you are still a SLAVE to the rich no matter what president is in office. Enjoy 2026.5 when the economy craters....

I will be on the sidelines eating popcorn watching it all BBUURRNN.

Komrad Trump fully intends to hand over Ukraine to Putin. And what country will Putin go after next - Poland, France, Germany... the U. S.??? Trump and Putin as a team looks more like Hitler just before WWII with every passing week. This is what happens when hate and intolerance is normalized by one man, just to win over ignorant, gullible, bigoted voters.

I didn’t see the USA turning communist as its downfall, I thought maybe isolationism or China getting better making chips or the EU getting better with software as potential economy softening moments, but I didn’t see “the leader of the free world” turn against itself.

I truly hope EU/UK wake up and start doing stuff on their own again, our own social media, our own operating systems and cloud products, in the UK’s case, their own water/electric grid and not all be owned by the USA or China.

Trump is a massive Putin fanboy. Gotta love those 25 years in power. The USA has a really inconvenient document that stops Trump from being President again in 2029. I'm sure once we get closer to the next election there might be talk about accidentally losing such trifling pieces of paper in the National Archives. Putin had the same sort of idea and it worked out just fine for him.

Most likely because America has lost a considerable amount of arsenal, so they're trying to be friends again, so they can secretly stock up.

America to Russia: Let's just forget that we indirectly tried to annihilate you, so can we just be friends again, so we can re-stock, and then we'll resume once again.

Nah, he'll just get elected speaker of the House then have the Pres/VP resign after the election.

See? Perfectly legal third term, since he wasn't "elected".

USA has spent more money on Ukraine than all the rest combined. About time we make other countries put money where mouth is. Sick of my tax dollars going to Ukraine.
I'm sick of reading lies. Europe has contributed more money to Ukraine's defence.

They contributed more before you even try to calculate the costs to them incurred of supporting the millions of Ukrainian refugees that they have accommodated in their countries.

As an aside, the USA has spent a fraction of its defense budget on aid to Ukraine over the last three years. For that it has severely degraded Russia's military potential and economic strength without the loss of a single American service person's life. A better deal you will not find.

All those Soviet era stockpiles and kit that worried so many? Up in smoke in Ukraine. The budget to maintain its nukes and navy? Blown on this war.

So you bought into that lie - no you actually haven't spent more money than the other countries combined. According to the Kiel insitute you are by far the largest contributor - but has spent less than the rest of Europe combined.
I agree - Europe should give more, and then held a summit last week to allocate more as well. The implication though, that if you withdraw all your support - you are in fact letting a dictatorship freely take over neighbour countries within the Nato protectorate zone. As the biggest defender of the "free world", not too good for the future of the US foreign relations. The US spent around 0.5% of their last years budget on Ukraine - withdraw those and you'll not save a single tax dollar as those will be allocated to funding other projects, most likely subsidiaries for billionaires.
But anyways - Europe will ramp up production of military assets and will continue to support democracy.

I wonder what's the point in saying such things when no one believes them.
I mean, Russia is third world, lagging in science and technology by decades, but it can't be just dismissed as a threat.

That is incorrect.

EU: 132 billion €
USA: 114 billion €

You can look up all the numbers to double check. The fact the trump keeps repeating the wrong numbers dosn't mean he is right.
Don't bother. You're wasting your time trying to explain/disprove anything to far-right ultra-nationalist Trump supporters who only believe whatever lies Fox News is parroting to them every night.
