Meink did not specify the nature of the weapons, according to CNN. However, the statement, made at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference in Maryland, remains significant because it represents a major shift in the US's posture toward outer space.
The declaration is likely aimed at China and Russia, which the US has long accused of developing and potentially testing military applications that could threaten orbital infrastructure. However, as a deterrent, its impact could be limited because other countries still lack a clear idea of the US's destructive capabilities in space.
While the statement is significant, it likely does not violate space law. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 prohibits deploying nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit but does not explicitly forbid conventional weapons.
Currently, the most viable theoretical space weapons would aim to neutralize communication satellites by jamming or destroying them. For example, Russia has previously warned that satellites supporting the defense of Ukraine, such as those used by Starlink, would be considered legitimate military targets. Late last year, intelligence services from two NATO countries claimed that Russia is developing a method of attacking satellites using clouds of tiny projectiles orbiting Earth at high velocities, but whether the country could deploy such a weapon remains unclear.
The US Space Force has also accused China of practicing coordinated satellite movements in low Earth orbit that it described as "dogfighting." Meanwhile, one theoretical defensive method might involve stationing a shielded mobile launch platform in orbit.
