Thief Benchmarked, Performance Review

That's not the case at all. From what I have seen so far the game will fully utilize up to 8 threads. The FX-8350 was completely maxed out at each frequency which makes the horrible AMD performance all the more surprising.
It really is utilising all the threads, thats odd because that would seem then to make it a better option than an i3 or i5 because it would utilize the threads but in this case it didnt. Odd indeed, maybe the performance of the multi-threading is poor for this game or something to the degree of "Mantle" was the focus lol.

Also @Steve any chance in the future you might throw some Kaveri APU's in the bench (Mostly for the CPU performance I mean) just to see how it handles.

But I guess the point here is buy Intel processors because the single threaded is just the better option for gaming. I can't wait for Haswell-E so I can grab the mid-range 6 core (Or possibly 8 core).

I've got this on a slightly under-clocked 7970 + i5 3570K, running at 1920x1080 at max. I've got 50+ fps from the benchmark tool.

I also want to mention, that Win8.1 plus Thief chews up 2.6GB VRAM on my GPU.... so anyone with stuttering or slow performance and a 2GB card should look at lowering texture details.

@Steve : Check the first pic on the last page. Some slight nudity is captured. :p

I'd like to ask, what motherboard did you guys use with the AMD processors? I didn't see it mentioned in the review, although I'm kind of just skimming over the article on my phone right now.

We used the Asrock 990FX Extreme9. The Core i7-4770K was the focus of the review for the GPU tests and we don't list all the different hardware used to test the CPU's, there is a lot and the motherboard choice doesn't impact the results at all.

Of course the i7-4770K was the focus, as it rightfully should be, I just wanted to have a bit more data behind the AMD setup.

How is 32fps not playable? damn some people are very picky
32FPS average is what they are saying is not playable. The problem is at an average like that, your going to be spiking around the 20's to possibly at highest 40's which would be hard to deal with especially in action seems if the game is skipping around. If it was at lowest 30 FPs (Heck lowest 25FPS) it would not be too bad, but when the average is just barely above 30 FPS that means your spiking around in a game that requires precision and stealth.

The problem with averaging around 30 FPS is that when the game gets intense, say a bunch of explosions or a thousand soldiers running your way, your FPS will dip into the 15-20 range which definitely will feel very choppy. When looking at 30 FPS as a statistic, you would want it to be the very minimum you get, not the average.

Yes, I am.

I would rather not play than deal with frame rate lag. But that's just picky old me.

I share the same sentiments, although based on the results I'd probably get away with mostly high settings minus a couple settings. Also I'd like to thank you for essentially simulating an FX-8320 by underclocking the FX-8350 from 4GHz to 3.5GHz. It's technically not the quite the same, but it should be a pretty good example of how the FX-8320 performs for this game.

Lastly I noticed a typo on the CPU page, where it says "FX-3850" instead of FX-8350.

Very disappointing results with the AMD processors.

Yeah, suprised to see an i3 cream it. I really want to support AMD, but even an FX-8350 isn't much of an upgrade over my i7 860 considering my needs. Sure, the FX is better at encoding audio and video. But I don't do any of that. :/

Agreed, one with a first generation i7 still shouldn't be interested in switching to an AMD FX series CPU. The first generation i7's really just set the bar when they came out. In my case, I no longer had my first generation i7 machine and was forced to downgrade temporarily to an ancient AMD Athlon 64 X2. Since I was coming from an old Athlon like that it didn't really matter what modern CPU I went with since they'd all be an enormous upgrade and the FX-8320 on sale for $130 was well within my budget while still being the huge jump in performance that I craved.

Did you run game at 32bit or 64bit ? I have FX-6300@4.5Ghz and R9 290 and in 32bit I get avg fps about the same as you with FX-8350, but in 64bit my avg fps is 53 ( about 5fps increase ).

All tests were run in the 64-bit mode.

I a bit disappointed with the quality - My rig is a i7 4770K - ROG MAXIMUS VI EXTREME - ROG MATRIX-HD7970-P-3GD5 and G.Skill TridentX F3-2133C9D-16GTX - no OC and win7 64bit.

Its no so crystal clear as I expected - the FPS is fine - but I wich the graphic was better.

Im still using the ol´ 13.12 and Im not sure if the Mantle gives me any benefits - and what about all the others games I have?

Can any one give me a update? Shall I chance and go Mantle or....??

Well I would grab the latest Beta since those add official Thief support. Plus Mantle does add significant improvements in Thief. Also check you graphics settings are set to max.

Thx. I will test the drivers - and yes my settings are all on max. (as always)

Got the new Mantle - but I still think its a bit blury and not so crisp as I did expect - however my Titanfall - BF and Crysis got a lift

It may just be Thief, ive played the game on my machine and it looked nice but there are some sections that are not super crisp. I would have to see what your talking about in all honesty, but I would suggest staying on the new drivers especially in regards to Mantle since things have been improving so much. BF4 for instance runs amazingly well now with Mantle in CFX mode and on an eyefinity setup giving it very nice performance.

For thief, it maybe the best you will get, I would just double check your settings and stuff to make sure its set to max and at the correct screen resolution.

My setting are max. out - all of them

But its a bit foggy - bleedig blue in the corners and generel Im not satisfied - specielly when I can see what I achieve in others games and if I compare my Thief with what I see on the net.

When I play Crysis and BF (and now Titanfall after the Mantle) they are crystalclear and have a big wow-effect - Thief are all the way a big visual disappointment.
