This Atlas robot cleans the house (and finds time to procrastinate)

Robots from the likes of Neato, iRobot and Dyson already help keep our homes clean but what we're all really waiting for is a true robotic maid like Rosie from The Jetsons.

The team over at the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC) has been working on just that with their Atlas robot. As you'll see, the robot isn't exactly speedy when it comes to chores (the clip has been sped up) but it does accomplish various tasks such as sweeping, moving a ladder and even vacuuming.

The robot is also quite the procrastinator, finding time to tool around with the broom stick and toss a paper airplane.

I wonder if the "teaching" of most of these tasks is by keyboard programing or if they are using the "move & remember" process you see with Fanuc style robotic units we use in assembly plants. It certainly has a LOT of potential, particularly in applications where the human present is unnecessary or unwanted. Something as simple of bomb disposal or ordinance retrieval and container depositing would be excellent, particularly with a human - remote control aspect. Doubtful that the unit cost could be made to where it is affordable by most households, but as said by 9Nails, if you could perfect it to rudimentary tasks, it would certainly be a top seller. Put a set of tits on it and teach it to shut up on command and ..... WOW!

It's only a matter of time before these robots are pleasuring the house wife that they replace
