This limited edition Ring Video Doorbell sells for $100,000

Smart home accessory maker Ring channeled its inner Vertu on Wednesday with the announcement of the Ring Elite Crown Jewel.

As the name suggests, this is a luxury offering of the highest caliber. The unit, based on Ring’s $499 Video Doorbell Elite, was designed by international fine jewelry specialist Bijan and features an 18K gold faceplate, 2,077 blue sapphires (33.2 carats) and 43 white diamonds (.56 carats). It sells for $100,000.

What person in their right mind would drop $100K on a jewel-encrusted doorbell (something that sits outside your door just waiting to be stolen)? Good question.

Before you go bashing the idea too hard, it’s worth noting that Ring is donating all proceeds from the sale of the doorbell to charity.

Only 10 examples are being made and they’ll be available exclusively via Selfridges, a high-end department store in the UK.

Just an example of stupidity and how money is being wasted. In the making, and in the buying.

How much of the proceedings will go to charity? How much does it cost to make one?

Why not the buyer buy a proper jewellery? And if want to give charity, why not give to charity directly.

Is it me, or why do so many of the "luxury offerings" I see look so horrendously ugly? The only reason I can think of is that the 'name' on it, or who made it, must be worth it (in the eyes of the buyer). For example, even though the lowly Ring company makes this, the article states it "was designed by international fine jewelry specialist Bijan". I can only assume if you're in the market to possibly buy this, Bijan for you and your friends must be a name that you know, and if you don't, well you are certainly not the type of refined person with the social standing to be their friend.
But then I'm a guy who still can't get over when I heard a person paid $10,000 (likely more now) for a Hermès handbag on their shop on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. The bag probably cost like $5 to make in Asia.

Did you read the article? ALL the proceeds go to charity, so the money certainly isn't *wasted*. Ring gets a tax break (I'm sure) and some advertising out of what they spent to produce it (which isn't much). Jewelry maker gets same thing, but is out the cost of the jewels. Everybody wins...

So far (knocks on wood) Ring and its software have not been exploited. It is far and away my favorite tech.
