AMD has recently spread a very interesting document among its closest partners proving the recently revealed info about the schedule for the new desktop Athlon XP processor based on 0.13micron Thoroughbred core. It is true: this CPU will appear only in the end of this quarter. According to the document, Thoroughbred will launch between mid-May and the end of June.

Also they claim that the first Athlon XP processor on Thoroughbred core will be marked as 2200+ and will work at 1800MHz. Then in Q3 the rating of Athlon XP (Thoroughbred) will reach 2400+ and by the end of the year the top Athlon XP will be the 2600+ one.

AMD insists that there will be three differences between palomino and the new Thoroughbred:

* CPUID will be changed to 680h;
* Vcore will be reduced down to 1.65V;
* The passive components, which used to be situated in the lower part of the processor, will now be moved to its upper part.

Am I right by saying that the Throughbred's will be compatable with the current mobos on the market? I'm asking this because my Abit KG7-RAID board just got new bios that allow for 0.13 AMD XP processors, but it didn't say anything about the Throughbreds.

If I remember correctly, the mobo must support lower voltages which is required for the Thoroughbreds. And this is also one of the requirements in the article posted :

AMD is warning that to support 2.0GHz operations, the onboard regulator must be capable of yielding 45 amps.

Not sure how to check that for mobos though.

Also found this today on a Tiwainese site. Pics of T-bred and side by side of the 3 different Athie's, T-bird, XP, & T-Bred. Also if you notice the two charts, AMD has and is sticking to Socket A while Intel has an over abundance of Socket combo's.

Well I commented on it yesturday, here it is from Chris Tom of AMDZone.com

Duron To Be Phased Out By Year End

Reported by: Chris Tom At: 6:54 PM Source: AMD

According to AMD during the just concluded 1st quarter 2002 earnings conference call Duron will be phased out as a product by the end of the year as flash production at 130 nanometers takes over FAB 25 here in Austin. The Duron price points will be taking over by Athlons at lower prices providing what AMD characterizes as a better deal for consumers on the low end. Athlons accounted for roughly 4.7 million out of the record 8 million CPUs AMD sold in Q1.

This makes perfect sense to me and sounds like AMD is gearing up to make Hammer the main line and Athlon the "budget" line !!
