The problem with cash shops versus subscriptions is simple and I don’t know why gamers participate. With the cash shop you’re looking at a disgusting game development system. They’re actually breaking the game and it’s mechanics so that they can sell you the fix for what they are breaking. I’ll never play a P2W game because it’s not about fun, progress or playing with others. These are the core components of MMORPG’S. The endgame items should be hard to get, not everyone that plays should reach that point because it requires time.
The thing that was good about WOWs TBC was that it offered the player a way to do raids with a little less effort than hard core players. I like for MMO’s that have the bigger 20 man dungeons to run and then have the smaller 10 man runs and if you weren’t interested in that you could simply do 5 man heroics and get drops plus earn badges. I hate the current game and dungeons because they are all about speed and getting through as fast as possible and that simply breaks the immersion of the game.
Rift at launch was probably the best game I’d ever played. The leveling was fun with quests but also lower level Rift’s to do and when you reached endgame you get great raids and tough and rewarding 10 mans plus easier but still relevant rift events for 10 and 20 man groups. Sadly before it could really entrench itself and stabilize its place, SWOTOR came out and because everyone was thinking it was the next wow killer game finally people went in droves. This forced Trion to sell and along came the worse gaming company in the world. Gamigo. A game that was a brilliantly designed and fun game with great classes became the victim of monetization. And I’ve yet to see another game that came close to offering something as new with winning ideas.
Now I’m left hoping Ashes of creation actually launches and can become the next step in mmo evolution and I’m also watching and hoping that Pantheon might can bring the type of evolution with the DND or EQ evolution of game play I miss. EQ was the most social mmorpg and I believe the total single player experience of today’s game have robbed the genre of what made it great in the beginning.
