Toshiba Satelite L300 start up problem

Hi, my mate asked me to have a look at his Lappy for him as it wont boot.
Its a Toshiba Satelite L300 1QA.
My first thought was HDD so i popped it out and plugged it into my desktop but it works fine as a drive (unsure as a boot option though)
So i stuck it back in and made sure it was connected properly and rebooted.

Note :- the battery is dead so it has to be plugged into the mains for normal usage.

Here is what happens when you turn it on.

1 Turn on, laptop starts to boot.
2 I hear fan and HDD spin up
3 I see Toshiba splash screen then system dies..

I try to to restart but all lights are dead too, so

I take battery out, then put it back in (while still plugged itn the mains) and then i have power light and battery charge light again,

Try to start again but cycle remains the same as above.

So, my mate told me the lappy worked fine plugged into the mains for long enough as the battery has not been able to power it alone for months, but just the other day it started to fail to boot.

I have no idea what it could be as i did a Google search but didnt find this issue mentioned hence asking here.

Hope you could maybe shed some light on what or where to start diagnosis.

p.s. while i had it in my dektop i copied the whole drive for back up ;p

Regards,

Lee.

If you can see the splash screen you should be able to boot from the CD/DVD, or does the laptop shut down?

Mmmm, the cpu fan spins till it dies so maybe its a motherboard problem then like you say ? Guess its a specialist electronics job ?

Mmm, i agree, think i will atempt a strip down to have a look before telling my buddy to go to a specialist $$$
Thanks for the help Tmagic ;)
