TP-Link routers could be banned in the US over national security concerns

So going by the comments TP-link is bad because
1) it's Chinese spyware
2) it's insecure

For 1, where is the proof? (Also where's the proof that Huawei did?*
For 2 ehh, yeah welcome to routers.
I would disagree with both. The biggest threat is that if a war was to erupt between us, these tplink routers would raise red flags and announce you the enemy of communist China.
As for Huawei, they were found to be aiding CCP allies with American tech. They were no less than caught selling 4g to Iran. That is when their representative was arrested, in Canada I think.
I do not believe TPlink or any other Chinese gadgets are dangerous just because.
But as I said above, every one of these things will aid China if we go into a conflict.
And the problem with China, the one problem that people should have learned well is that you
never know when a dictator decides it is time to write his name into history books by returning every piece of land ever owned by his ancestors.
The West happily traded with Russia for tens of years. But when it recovered from USSR collapse, it went to the old way, openly attacking neighbors and committing war crimes. USSR existed to expand. Which was supposed to be a lesson, not about USSR, but about how Russian mentality works. The biggest country on earth needs a bit more land for happiness.
These lessons must be learned before it is too late to fix these mistakes.
It was not done with Russia, it will be x10 times harder with China which actually can make a computer or 99% homemade rocket.

Just curious but was there any evidence that the balloon that was shot down was actually a spy balloon? Does the US not have spy satellites any more hovering over other countries? I'm fairly impressed with my TP mesh router so I guess I'll stick with it. I guess at the end of the day you just have to choose between the East or the West spying on you ... or both ... along with Google, Amazon, Facebook and YouTube.

Get a router that supports something like the OpenWRT firmware
The bad part is that OpenWRT is missing that mesh wireless stuff that the base ASUS firmware has. AiMesh is one of them. I use that heavily in my home.

It wasnt a spy balloon unless you live in looney land. Trumpers and Elon boot lickers love a good conspiracy and pushing it as fact. Wait for the response, its always worth it for a good laugh.

Take a look at that posters posting history for all the context you need. Most folks just have some folks who post this on block as there is no rational conversation to be had.

As far as China spying on me, who cares? The USA is already spying on me and I dont really care if they know what video game I am playing or what website I am visiting. I mean I care as far as my privacy is concerned but there is really nothing that can be done about it so like whatever. It doesnt give them an advantage to know I played PoE 2 last night instead of Civ 6. lol. Anyone thinking they are not already completely 100% surveilled are not living in reality.

The only TP-Link branded device I currently have in use is a Ethernet over electric cabling device, basically like Netgear's "Powerline" adapters. Since it's all internal, and it goes back to a differently branded router to actually get out on the internet, there shouldn't really be any inherent risk in using it right? Not that I'm really worried about Xi Jinping seeing my Playstation network traffic but still curious.

Chinese companies selling their products at a loss in order to be able to easily steal sensitive data...
God, what a suprise!

The Chinese have been siphoning western knowledge and technology innovations for decades now, with the help of big corporations which moved their factories to China to make more profit.
Now, we are beginning to see the backlash.
They have good universities, schools where children are disciplined and go there to work and learn something useful whereas in France and other western countries, we have ***** students, for the most part, who don't know how to read or write anymore! Gorgeous!
A bit of a caricature, but barely...
"The Chinese have been siphoning western knowledge and technology innovations for decades" BECAUSE we move our manufacturing plants there decades ago.
Now, we are seeing the backlash.

For 2 ehh, yeah welcome to routers. The category where you're sold a device that maybe gets one or two updates. That's not a tp link problem.
TP link being the biggest means they're the most interesting target. I don't think they actually do worse than say Netgear.

Want to keep up to date? Get a router that supports something like the OpenWRT firmware, added bonus is a lot more features and in some cases stability.

*You know who has been proven to build backdoors into their network devices? American owned Cisco! So I trust TP link more than I do Cisco.

I agree. Being most popular means more targeting by bad actors.
Just like Windows versus iOS/iPadOS.
And... as Apple's products got more popular, attacking them has as well.

If agencies want to go after who has 'too big' a market share, how about iPhone in the US, huh? I believe they'd qualify as much as TP-Link does in that category.
(and yeah, I know they are already after Google and now healthcare)

Spies: We can't get into your hardware. Give us a backdoor. US vendors have.
Vendor: We don't give out backdoors. Get lost.
Spies: Give us a backdoor or we'll tell everyone the Chinese government has one.
Vendor: We don't give out backdoors. We've already told you to get lost, so get lost.
Spies: Hey everybody, the Chinese government has hacked into Vendor's hardware. You should use US Vendor hardware instead.

Any one own or have opinion about the little know "MikroTik - hEX series," routers.
They don't advertise. Their routers are small and have a heap of features (wired).

But they are not easy to set up and don't even have a proper manual.

I bought one, just haven't installed it yet. Currently using a TP-Link wired router. Hence the question.

Err the West siphoned off Eastern technology and culture for CENTURIES, not to mention most of the entire World's natural wealth and resources (including people - though they didn't regard them as actual people) 🙄

Now we're seeing the backlash, and the slow but sure decline of undeserved and amoral western hegemony. All right whingers have got left is a pathetic plea for fascist dictatorships, which will also backfire and bring more misery to their dumb supporters (who will of course blame everyone else for their 'misfortune')...

But hey, banning "arabic" numerals in schools will definitely help 🤣

You have 'western envy'. The truth is that Western men developed almost everything you touch. For example, the transistor was developed by Edward Shockley, he got the Nobel Prize for it.

Obviously, if TP-Link has 65% of the market, then they will experience 65% of the hacking. Why ban them for being successful?

I don't see your point, that's about what I said in my post... "...with the help of big corporations..." instead of your implied "because"...

That's one way to put it, I'm not a right winger by any means, but you have to think globally about this. Among all the populations on earth, why did people from Europe find it necessary to explore the world and invent new tools and technology? Why wasn't it the African or the people from another part of the world? This is pointless, if they had the opportunity, do you think Asians or others would have done things differently?
Decline is caused by complacency, laziness and too much comfort, which leads people to think that all we got is forever and that we have reached THE golden age and that no effort whatsoever is necessary anymore (and politicians, who have a huge responsibility in this!) And a whealth of other reasons too, but that would be too long a debate for this forum.
