Twitter is testing posts that disappear after 24 hours

What just happened? Twitter is finally hopping aboard the ephemeral train. Starting today, the microblogging platform is testing a new feature called fleets – temporary posts that disappear after 24 hours and have no likes, public comments or retweets.

In announcing the feature, product manager Mo Al Adham said some people feel insecure about tweeting because tweets are public, permanent and display public engagement counts such as likes and retweets.

Fleets are being pitched as an alternative for people that aren’t comfortable with the perpetual nature of standard tweets. They can include text, videos, GIFs and photos and can be replied to directly via DM so long as your DMs are open. Fleets live at the top of your home page and are visible to anyone that has access to your full profile.

“In an initial survey, people told us that, once the fleets are gone, they are more comfortable sharing every day and everyday thoughts,” Adham said.

The concept of ephemeral content has really taken off in recent years on the back of platforms like Snapchat and Instagram but don’t be deceived. Once you put something on the Internet, it’s there for the taking. The instant it goes up, someone can capture a screenshot. How about the Wayback Machine? Will it work with fleets the same way it does with tweets?

I’m just saying – if you are that concerned about a thought or opinion being shared on the Internet, don’t put it there to begin with.

The feature is initially being tested in Brazil. Based on how testing goes, Twitter will decide if it wants to expand the feature to other regions.

There are a lot of professional athletes who have made some incredibly dumb comments via Twitter that are going to love this.

LOL, like that would do any good. People screen shot something and it's there forever.

If people aren't going to take the time to think posts through enough to the point where they have to delete them in 24 hours, what does that say about the quality of content on social media?

Giving people the tools to spread misinformation, stupidity, or lies on a massive scale and then cover for their mistakes doesn't make you a good guy twitter. It's single highhandedly damaging society.

Except for the brain-dead tweets that will live forever as a monument to (especially) politicians' and other people's stupidity!!

This is very good because:
People relate to their thinking way too much. Nothing is constant, the only truth is change. So if your tweet is starting to steer a lot of thought in your mind... this might be why.

Could be a very good way to vent out. As usually, people who vent, do it to release emotions, and... many don't like or don`t identify anymore (after writing) with those sentences and that emotion behind the text... Much more awareness.

In a way this can create of sense of freedom in the author and of less (I give to receive) type of thing. Of course, expect to see really intimate, really truthful, or really "top" secret ideas from now on. I doubt some want to depart from their (not real) sense of self in the media environment.

I only post on here. I have no face book, Twitter, tic toc. Nothing and it is wonderful. I am glad I did it. Every one should.
