Twitter says it is adding an edit button, but not because of Elon Musk

In brief: Twitter has confirmed it is working on an edit button. It's not an April Fools' Day joke, and the decision hasn't come as a result of its largest shareholder, Elon Musk, tweeting out a poll asking users if they want the feature.

The Twitter comms account wrote that it has been working on an edit feature since last year. Those who subscribe to the Twitter Blue service will get to try it out first, sometime in the coming months.

The company also emphasized that the edit button isn't arriving as a result of Elon Musk's poll. It was revealed this week that the Tesla CEO bought a 9.2% stake in Twitter worth around $2.89 billion on March 14, making him the company's largest shareholder. Musk then posted a poll asking if people wanted an edit button, which saw almost three-quarters of respondents vote in favor of the feature.

Twitter already revealed it was working on an edit button, but it purposely tweeted the announcement on April 1 so it would be taken as an April Fools' Day joke. Twitter product lead Michael Sayman later said the tweet was the company's "official statement."

A small demo GIF shows the feature will work by simply clicking on the three dots next to a posted tweet and selecting Edit Tweet.

Twitter's VP of consumer product, Jay Sullivan, said that an edit button had been the most requested Twitter feature for years, allowing people to alter tweets with mistakes and typos without needing to delete the entire post. However, he did note that "without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation," which is why the feature will take time and requires plenty of input.

If you want to be one of the first to try the edit feature, and get access to an Undo Tweet option that's available now, you can sign up to Twitter Blue right here.

Let's keep in mind, a lot of these policies were put in place at the beginning of the Trump Administration.

I noticed a lot of social medias that had dislike buttons and comment ratings DISABLED THEM because they knew the comments sections were gonna be lit on fire.

It wasn't until the impending end of his administration they started to actually enforce their anti-bullying/harassment policies.

All these stupid emojis when all we actually needed was a "thumb up/ Thumb down".

Now: you have to make a risque/ edgy comment to show disapproval.

No, Trump and politics had absolutely nothing to do with this. In fact I think he delayed the change because people hate that clown so much.

The change was made to hide the "dislikes" from youtube's big ad buyers (aka big corporations).

Twitter: We're re-adding freedom of speech...but not because of Musk...
What is it exactly that you people want that would constitute "freedom of speech" ? Conservatives always whine about their freedom of speech being violated and then they vow to go start their own social media platform chuck full of this mysterious "freedom of speech" sauce.

But of course it never goes anywhere. It either ends up a platform for Nazis and white supremacist, or it fails because there are no "libs to own" on that platform. So tell me, what is freedom of speech to you? (Hint: posting lies, misinformation, propaganda, and inciting violence is not it.)

Yes, freedom of speech includes "posting lies," "misinformation," and "propaganda."

All this left-right, liberal-conservative nonsense is just that, it's nonsense. If you align with 100% of either party, you're an empty shell regurgitating propaganda meant to keep us divided. For your information, being a freedom of speech absolutist used to be a staunch liberal stance, it's interesting how it has shifted in recent years and how everyone tows their party line.

If you follow any mainstream news, be it Fox News or CNN, you're brainwashing yourself with propaganda.

"If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're misinformed." - Mark Twain

If they had that magic Edit button, I'd say 100% of Trump's and his treasonous sycophants' posts would have been edited- and re edited ad nauseum!!

Liberals seem to think everyone who disagrees with them is a Nazi so that doesn't leave many remaining...

To be fair, it doesn't help that so many Nazi have so much so say against "liberals" and that Trump has attracted pretty much every racist and misogynist who wanted to speak out to his side.

Kinda hard not to see many comments being "censored" when that's the things they are promoting.
