Not quite true. You're correct that 40% of UK electrical energy comes from renewables.

We were debating whether the electricity we use to recharge our EV's comes from renewable sources. I guess I can still stick with my figure of 40% for the UK. I appreciate the other info though, that clears up why I was seeing 40% shown in some figures and 12% elsewhere.

An EV on the hand is limited to the lifespan of its cells and when they are knackered a new one is probably going to cost multiple times what the car is worth, so you buy a new car and the carbon cycle for the EV starts again.

True. An EV is limited by the lifetime of its cells. That, however, focuses on the "fear" that the battery needs replacing sometime and that it will be expensive to do so.

Even the older tech of the NiMH batteries in my Prius have been known to last 300,000 - 500,000 miles. My car, living in a northern US climate where lots of salt is used on the roads in winter, is rusting out, and I have "only" 110,000 miles on it so far.

IMO, how long the battery lasts is a "Fear Factor" that is unlikely to present itself within the lifetime of the car unless you happen to be someone who buys a car and drives it for some multiple of 100,000 miles that happens to match or exceed the expected lifetime of the battery. For people like me in a road salt heavy environment, the body will almost certainly fall apart from rust well before the useful lifetime of the battery is reached.

He's obsessed with blowing $44B buying Twitter... money that would be MUCH better spent getting his EV semi's into mass production and installing battery-swap kiosks at every truckstop between LA & NYC (not to mention modernizing his aging automotive line.)

His competition (just about every other car/truck maker) is poised to relegate Tesla to the scrapheap of automotive history and he's worried about giving Donald Trump a second platform to spread hate & misinformation.

It -- just like an IC engine -- might last eight times as long or more. But then again, it may not. The "fear" is not an irrational one.

Having said that, though, it's worth pointing out that on *other* maintenance costs, a Tesla, at least, tends to outperform conventional vehicles.

Talk to Musk/Tesla about the warranty. The battery pack in a new Prius (plugin or not) is warrantied for 150,000 miles in states that have CA like emissions laws. https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a31274277/prius-battery-life/ In NON-CA Emissions law sates, its 100,000 miles. Musk and Tesla offering crap like this is why it is MY OPINION that Musk/Tesla will fail when the other real automakers get their EV show on the road. A warranty is not necessarily, however, an indicator of when something will fail. New electronics, TVs, HTRs, etc, typically have a 1-year warranty but last much longer than that.

And besides, for someone like you, it is something that can be replaced without taking it to the dealer. Its not rocket science, and there is a market where used Hybrid batteries and cells can be bought and sold.

I'll give you credit, though, pretty much all EVs are predicted to have significantly lower overall maintenance costs.
