Upgrading iMac OS Software

I'm technically challenged, and must have an OS software newer than the OS 10 that I have. I tried down-loading 10.13, but got nowhere after half an hour! I'd click on installer image, and it would tell me the image was corrupted. Would appreciate suggestions. Thanks!

You are using the right approach -- I would use

(apple)->About This Mac->Software Update. That way you'll get the latest
