US Justice Department calls for Google to sell Chrome to end search monopoly, puts Android under scrutiny

Chrome is not the same browser and Chromium. Chromium is open source and is not technically owned by Google. Chrome is. Even though one is based on the other, they are different browsers. Google can't sell Chromium because they don't own it.

I understand Chromium is not Chrome, but according to Wikipedia "Chromium is a free and open-source web browser project, primarily developed and maintained by Google at https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src and the developer is listed as The Chromium Projects, controlled by Google." So I'm still not clear on what happens to Chromium if this goes through.

Nothing happens. Once again, Google may fund it and even control it but they don't OWN it. The US government can not force them to SELL what they don't OWN. The best they can do is order them to pass on control to another entity.

Chromium is like a public park that Google is cleaning and maintaining. Chrome is like an adjacent park that Google owns. If Google doesn't own Chrome anymore, they can either continue maintaining the public park, either let the community do whatever they want with it.

Too bad Edge uses Chromium code and will eventually push Manifest V3 at some point. As for Firefox, man... have you looked at how they're doing financially? They're practically on death's doorstep.
I have noticed my Firefox browser has been squirrely lately, some websites don't want to load, had to use Edge to go to my pharmacy site!😲

This is because FireFox is 100% HTML5 compliant. Chromium, and it's derivatives have deviated from those specs deliberately to shut out non-chromium based browsers. This has had the effect of website admins writing their site specs to match the Chromium specs rather than maintaining HTML5 standards.
