USB Trouble

I have a strange problem. my computer is failing to recongize any device I plug in via usb ports. whether it's my printer or my usb storage device. everytime I plug something in it says "unknown device" and then when I try to update, it says "you have the best driver installed for device" I can't figure it out. I'd appreaciate some help.
