Solved Use Malwarebytes to remove malware but PC still not 100%

Resetting Edge didn't help. But Yipeee! After some online searching I found the solution HERE

One needs to delete the file %USERPROFILE%\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\counters.dat
but one needs to edit the registry before they can do so. Tip: INetCache is a hidden Windows folder. To be able to see it when navigating File Explore one need open Control Panel->Folder Options and uncheck Hide protected operating system files

Now that I have this resolved, will go back to following cleanup instructions and post back later

Computer is running great. I still have the Control Panel hang when it opens - but I'm convinced that's a Windows issue so will address that somewhere else.

Thank you for all the help! :)

Download Windows Repair (All in One) from this site

Install the program then run it.

NOTE 1. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8 right click on the program, click "Run As Administrator".
NOTE 2. Disable your antivirus program before running Windows Repair.

Go to Step 3 and click on Check button next to 1. See If Check Disk Is Needed.
If the tool that the Check Disk is needed click on Do It button next to 2. Check Disk.

Post Windows Repair log which is located in the following folder:
64-bit systems - C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs
32-bit systems - C:\Program Files\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs

Thank you for your never ending passion to help but I should add
  • I no longer have the laptop. Lent back to a friend who needed it
  • I didn't mention Control Panel works fine when I boot Windows into safe mode
  • Plus I noticed event log has multiple repeat entries to IDTNC64.cpl - the IDT audio applet that's failing
so it must be the audio driver causing the ControlPanel issue. I'll be looking at the sound driver when I get the laptop back. Thanks again.
