Two years ago, Valve hired a group of modders behind the popular Unreal Tournament 2004 co-op mod called Alien Swarm. The team has since contributed to popular games such as the Left 4 Dead Series and Portal 2, but on the side, they were hard at work on a Source version of Alien Swarm, and the fruits of their labor will be released on Monday – for free.

In addition to providing the game free of charge, Valve will release its complete code base, including updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration to provide "more insight and examples" for aspiring modders and small-time developers.

Alien Swarm is described as a tactical top-down shooter that "thrusts players into an epic bug hunt featuring a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics." There's also mention of over 40 weapons and equipment with "countless" loadout configurations, four unique classes, eight characters, and 64 achievements.

now why can't other game company's follow valve's example. First portal was given away for free not to long ago now this game!

Although, imagine the amount of new people downloading steam to get this free game. Soon enough they to will be hooked on weekend sales, mid week sales, summer sales, and Christmas sales!!

You've said it guest, that's why. Anyhow, this to me smells like the good old days of shareware.

As for Valve's plans, a couple of years later you will have Alien Swarm 2 released for reduced retail prices and a new powerful franchise will be born.

I remember the old UT2004 days! i still have that installed! it was awesome on a new level! if hard at first :)

Alien swarm were good times, tough game and lots of fun, can't wait for them to release this version!

never heard of it for some reason... or is it that top-down shooter game. i sort of remember seeing that.

i'm a bit torn with valve lately, because they keep failing to release details on Half-Life 2... the only source game that actually matters.

Sounds like a fun game. I'll definitely check it out. Sigh...one more game to play and not enough time to play it. I wish they would at least unlock a pre-download, hopefully I'll be able to download it quickly enough when it gets released.
