Virtual Shadow Copy (VSS) error on backup - Windows 7

I have just finished installing my files and programs onto a new Windows 7 64 bit pc.

When I tried to backup, it failed with a message that the Virtual Shadow Copy Service met an unexpected error.

I've checked Services and found that VSS is set to "Manual" as default.

Any ideas on what the problem is and how to correct it?

If you didn't already try starting the service, and setting it to "Automatic", you probably should.
If these settings are okay and you still have the problem, another distinct possibility is that antivirus or firewall software (esp. third-party) is interfering with it (you could temporarily disable any such while backing up).

I thought that I'd reset the items in Services to Automatic, but looking there they are set to Manual. I've reset them.

There was one - Microsoft Shadow Copy set as Disabled.

Anyway - all sorted and backup is underway!!
