Toke use exploded because people like Google released updates that turned my phone's power button into an AI button that I have literally never used. Every web search is now an AI bot and we have even seen "Linux use" go from 2.5% to 8% and most of that increase is just AI bots skimming the Internet.

Outside of scientific and research purposes, AI products are almost universally hated. Kids are only using it to get out of home work. There are the AI girlfriends and who didn't see that one coming.

But here is something that everyone seems to forget that preaches about AI token numbers. More advanced models use more tokens. If you take away the AI button on phones, copilot and web searches the same people are paying for AI. The cost of compute hasn't changed and bloating up AI models that have basically platued in performance. Applied AI hasn't grown, it's the same people doing the same work only the models use more tokens now than they did a year ago.

The real trend in AI is buying a couple of racks and running free open source models locally. It's not the datacenter ready hardware that's making a splash from Nvidia, it's the racks with 8GPUS in it that companies like SuperMicro are selling

Given that only about 15% of token usage comes from mobile phones, obviously "people like Google" allegedly making something to your phone's power button can't be the reason for the 300x surge.

Why are you denying it? Do you own an AI toilet? This wasted token usage is coming from everywhere and that's kind of my point. I'm sorry that my nonsense is inconvenient for your stock portfolio

It's not *JUST* Google, it's everyone throwing as much AI into everything and collecting market data about what works and what doesn't. I argue that a power button is overwhelmingly more useful than an AI button and that regular toilets work fine with AI toilets not actually solving a problem along with AI dishwashers or the AI assistant on my TV that can only paraphrase the usuermanual to me and doesn't actually help me change any settings, but it can show me targeted ads!

I'm denying obvious falsehoods. The skyrocketing token usage does not come from phone buttons, and it's even more ridiculous to ascribe to AI toilets, AI dishwashers and similar contraptions.
The overuse of AI in marketing and pretending that everything is 'AI -powered' reflects the fact people like and want to have AI everywhere, of which unscrupulous marketers take advantage. The actual amount of tokens used by these things is negligible.

Most statistics around AI are totally made up.

E.g. "almost 49% of US adults now use AI chatbots" is valid for the 'now' of year+ ago.
Today, ~90% of the US adults around me use AI, the percentage among teens in high school approaches 100. Same for "anger against new data centers" which exists mostly on the internet, or "tens of thousands of workers who've lost their jobs as a result of automation or AI investment" (there's no unemployment increase since AI became a thing).

I bet even the wokesters militating against AI on the photo above use AI regularly (unless the image is AI generated).

I am a huge opponent to the AI bubble, I am pretty annoyed about the hype, it is a montecarlo autocomplete with a bit of logic in it... but not too deep. Or if you go really deep you have to pay for it dearly crazy tokens or subs ... It won't change the world, or revolutionise everything at once, the whole thing has to be really precise and systemic, more like what Hassabis did with the protein, get something, train it to the max, with human expertise... and then solve things.
