Windows 7 Questions

No that's just how it works . When I'm in 7 the 7 install is C and XP is G. When in XP it's C and 7 is G. I just renamed the drives so I don't get mixed up. Other than that there's no problem with them switching back and forth. Like I said just go in disk management in 7 and change the logical drive letters to what they are in XP then they stay the same and only the OS drive letters change. In your case you'll have to do it again in vista. I did have to install my games in a different partition so I can access them from any of the OS's and still have the same save points which can be tricky because you lose the saves sometimes. So install the game 3 times to the same folder, then copy in the save game files if they are kept in the installation folder. if they are saved in app data files then it starts to get a bit schizophrenic. There! Now do I have you thoroughly confused? LOL

I saw the article on the front page a week or so ago about someone getting it on a very old PC, and then over the 4th I was at my grandparents and they still had an old computer I had given them years ago, so I brought it home and tried to put Windows7 on it.

It is a Pentium II 350 with 128Megs of RAM.

I should have known something was up when I could not get it to boot from the Windows 7 disk, I even set every possible boot option in the BIOS to CDROM (yeh its a dvd, but thats how its referred to in that old BIOS). I confirmed the drive was good by booting off a linux dvd. Luckily I hadn't wiped the hd yet and it had XP on it, so I thought I'd try and launch the install from XP, hoping it would at least put enough files on the hd that it could boot from there and start the setup.

Trying to launch the install from XP I got an error complaining about not having enough RAM. It needs 512 (apparently there is a switch you can use to get it to ignore that limitation). I have an old PowerMac G4 that I use and it has 768Megs of RAM in it so I took 512 out and put it in the P2. Solved that problem. But then I ran into a problem I don't know if I can overcome. Windows 7 (and I believe Vista) require ACPI 2.0, apparently the BIOS on that P2 doesn't support that. I did look for a bios update, but gave up when I couldn't do an update from within Windows, I didn't read the changelogs to see if ACPI 2.0 is even implemented..

On a positive note (some of you will debate how positive this is) I did get WindowsME installed, and its running great. Splash screen to usable desktop in 10 seconds, with 192MB of RAM (after removing the 512 I found a 128 module and used it in place of one of the original 64 meg ones).

Sounds as bad as my laptop. A 166MHz pentium MMX with 128MBs of RAM running XP Pro. I use it for banking and bill paying and nothing else, I think it's a 2.02GB HDD. The thing is slow as snot. Satellite Pro 460CDX. Hmmm...You may have given me an idea for something to do to cure my boredom tonight. I'll let you know later.

...Xp's like grandma. She needs to go to the old folks home but she's family and I'm used to having her around.

That's probably the best analogy I've heard about Xp...props, luv! At this point, as I've been running the RC since it came out, I went back to Xp a couple of weeks ago. While playing around in it, I thought something was wrong...it just seemed slower...

I've already pre-purchase Win7 and am looking forward to the release...

but will probably keep my "grandma" Xp64 Pro around...handy...for a while.

OK Excuse me but i just got really confused. They are selling the Windows 7 Home prem. upgrade for $49. I thought you couldn't upgrade to Win 7 from XP but the MS store says you can buy the upgrade if you have Windows XP. Boy do they know how to generate confusion. Then they have this...

Preorder Download
$49.99
Preorder Download + Backup Disc
$49.99+$14.95
Preorder Ship It
$49.99

OMG I just gotta pay the extra $15 so I have the disk AND have it installed the same day it comes out! LM#AO!! No deals on ultimate though. You rich guys gotta pay full bloat!

Hi,

Does anyone know if office 2000 will be supported in Windows 7

the best way to find out is to dual-boot a copy of the RC and try it for yourself. some features may work and others may not so it's tough to say, but someone else might know - I don't really use MS Office, open office is the way to go anyways...

You can upgrade to 7 from XP. They generally allow 2 generations back to upgrade.

As far as Office 2000, I would think it will be fine, but I don't have any proof.

I'm thinking an upgrade from a basic 32-bit home version of XP to a 64-bit Ultimate version of Win7 is still going to be pricey in my case, if it's even possible. Probably better off just buying the full version when it's released. I wonder if I should just aim for the Premium package instead...

I'm dual booting at work with Win7 as well. Tried to install Office 2000 and it had some issues. I hadn't played around with it too much but I'm sure there is (or at least will be) a work-around and/or fix.

I'll dink around some more on Monday and let you folks know.

Microsoft Office 2000 Professional SR1 installs and runs fine on my Windows 7 RC without the use of 'compatibility mode' or anything funny.

^I see you have some CS4 on there too... still gotta install Photoshop under 7 myself. Did you run any special compatibility settings for that or was it straightforward? I asked about it awhile back and someone said it would work but when I tried it got all mad and told me I didn't have XP or Vista lol.

The beta and RC verisons work very well on many platform/hardware combinations now, so I won't worry about the final release. Running Vista and Windows 7 64 bit side by side on one system, I have more issues with Vista than I do with Windows 7

My RC build doesn't stay asleep. I can manually put it to sleep and it seems to wake up within an hour. If I just have the power management settings set to sleep after a while, it does go to sleep, but then it wakes up on its own. I did look through the Event Viewer and the best I can come up with is some Media Center thing.. I do/did try to use Media Center, but its pretty worthless for me now because the RC killed my TV audio.

Just a quick question... are there any features in Vista that were not carried over to 7? I'm trying to convince a good friend of mine that 7 will be far superior of an OS compared to Vista, but he's reluctant to agree. He hasn't really tried it out for himself anyways, because he's bent on proving how Vista is not a well-disguised failure, which it clearly is.

I've been running Vista Home Premium x64 side by side with Windows 7 beta and Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RC for a couple of months now. All my Vista apps work with Windows 7. Windows 7's desktop and taskbar are far superior to Vista. The speed of bootup and shutdown is much faster in Windows 7... Overall video is brighter and faster in Windows 7. General game play is faster and more responsive in Windows 7. Remember, the hardware is identical in my dual boot PC. Only the drivers and OS's are different. Windows 7 and Vista are installed on separate hard drives

Alright thanks for the input, I showed him your post and he just walked away all upset haha. I told him you can't dispute facts, and that 7 is just better so my guess is he's probably going to try it out for himself in the next few days. I told him I would just dual boot it for him so he could keep his lousy Vista, but chances are he's just going to be an over-critical *** about using it after I'm done. Everyone else I've recommended to try it has loved it so if he doesn't like it he's just being difficult.

<rant>I'm not sure why you'd go through so much effort to convince anyone that 7 is better than Vista. 7 is great and better than Vista in my opinion, but people in general just hate change. He'll come around when he comes around. Vista works great on all the machines I've ever installed it on and so has 7, but I'm tired of trying to convince people to use this or use that. I'll make the suggestion once - it's up to them to take the advice or not. If they take the advice I may provide a little assistance and if not then they're on their own when they see the light. From now on I just do what I feel is best and at work I'll move everyone to 7 when I feel like the time is right (which is soon since I get it in less than 2 weeks.)

If you want something interesting to read look for all the threads about XP when it first launched - they're almost identical to the threads bashing Vista. Look how hard it is to get people to move from XP now. Some people don't want to spend the money or don't have money to spend in order to get something speedy/new enough to run Vista/7 well - and for them XP is great. It works and hopefully keeps working for them until they do get a machine that runs a newer OS well. At that point I hope they convert, but I just wish they would stop hating everything they can't run now. </rant>

@LNC, I could care less which OS anyone uses; I didn't really put any effort into convincing him to switch. I just mentioned it to him one day and he went off saying that 7 wasn't any better than Vista and whatnot. Since he hadn't even tried it out for himself, I told him to at least give it a try before he started making all sorts of false claims. It's true that people don't like to change, and even I admit to being a bit stubborn at times, but it bothers me when people make assumptions about things they know nothing about. Regardless, I talked to him the other day and he already had the RC dual-booted. He told me that he really liked the beta fish! :haha:

I'm using Windows 7 RC exclusively now. It does everything Vista did plus more... You just have to have a stable computer... It is amazing how many people don't. Wait till they experience the fast startup and shutdown of Windows 7

So my PC has been crashing too much lately and i had some OS problems. I'm currently using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and so i thought that i would switch to Windows 7. So the question is - what build should i use until the RTM comes out? I usually would wait for Windows 7 to come out but since i need a quick change 'cause of my PC problems which build would you recommend?
