Windows 8.1 Update 1 launches April 8, Start Menu returns in later update

Is it really necessary to polarize the debate to two extremes, like Windows 8 is the best and if you disagree you are a hater? There is a lot of space in between there.
from my point of view, the polarizing thing about windows 8 is the start menu (which makes windows 8 unusable, according to most of the haters I encountered on the net)

Start Menu was only part of my complaint. My main complaint this whole time was "window frame transparency". I don't have to look for a complaint, it seems my original complaint still holds.
I didn't see any sense in buying an OS for $100, of which nearly every built-in application needs replacing with third party applications before I would be happy with it. Makes me wonder what they are thinking when they can't create one built-in application worth my time. Especially when free-ware applications are usually sufficient in satisfying my needs/wants.
What's really funny to me is being labeled as a "Windows H8ter", when I found nothing in Windows 7 worth my time consecutively complaining.
BTW: I'm still waiting on Win7 SP2. I meant what I said. MS will not get another cent from me unless they put out SP2. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm only one person and MS doesn't care about the wishes of just one person. I have faith though that corporate will force MS to consolidate all their updates.

I did not label @@cliffordcooley as a 'windows h8ter' because he has a lot of 'problems' about windows 8.
one thing that got me thinking though, if Microsoft would release SP2 for windows 7, then there is really no need for @@cliffordcooley to buy another OS? :)
(and windows 8 was for a time (until January 31, 2013) available for ~40$.)

Windows 8 is going to get even better with this update, it's a shame it has so many haters, but thanks to them we're getting our beloved start menu, though I was already comfortable without it....

The USS StartMenu set sail from Port Washington two years ago and has been floundering in the Pacific ever since, haunted like an ancient mariner with an albatross in its wake. Nothing Microsoft does now will restore its user base to the pre-Applefication era the company once enjoyed. Quite frankly, Microsoft smells like dead fish. And only a fisherman will tell you his fish don't stink.

We also must have an option to disable metro completly, even when installin so can choose no metro and start button back ...

I think there'll be an option for disabling Metro Apps in this future update as Metro Apps can now be windowed.

This looks good and it should make Windows 8.1 more palatable to those who disliked the Metro/Modern User Interface (once the Start Menu officially returns later this year). I do hope Microsoft has improved the compatibility with older games in this new update; I still can't install Descent 3 or Sinistar Unleashed because the installers won't run in Windows 8.1.

Wait for Windows 9. MS only gets it right every other version.
There wasn't a darn thing wrong with W7.
You can tighten up code, eliminate bloat, increase speed.
But don't waste valuable resources messing up the interface.

I tried my best to be patient with them; but their level of incompetence to add the start button 18 MONTHS later is absolutely ridiculous. I think Microsoft is internally weak from their 20 year reign of monopoly. Their lack of competition made them so brittle in creative thought --- Windows 8 is the result of that. They literally have to build themselves from the ground up again. These are their growing pains unfortunately.

My rejection of Windows 8 has always been based around the concept of MS using color coded squares and non-transparency effects. My persistence to stay with Windows 7 is anchored by the thought of non-support, by MS not releasing Win7 SP2. I am losing hope in MS doing the right thing! MS knows what they need to do, and they are intentionally ignoring corrective measures.

Well I opted for W7 for my latest build. Why? Well for starters it was cheaper than W8. Second I don't need any add on programs to get it work how I would be comfortable. DVD playback support out of the box. Speed advantage not an issue as using SSD and I5 processor.

Finally I use W7 at work so I don't need to remember all the differences on the GUI interface.

I have been using start 8 from Stardock since day one of windows 8. Always had the start menu.

I think the Metro UI is nice. Just not on desktop.

Maybe Microsoft should only configure the Metro UI for Tablets and Phones only.
Remove from desktop but leave the apps. Get the picture? lol!
