Windows Explorer Repeatedly & Constantly Crashes

For 2 or so days now my sisters laptop has been having problems with Windows Explorer repeatedly crashing for no apparent reason.
Have not tried anything to fix problem yet as do not know where to start.
As soon as the laptop is logged in, explorer starts crashing & when it reboots it crashes again. Laptop is Windows XP and so far to my knowledge no new programs or files have been installed, will post new information as I find out.
Need urgent help as laptop is needed for assignments.

Can you log on via Safe Mode?

yes, am able to log on via safe mode

When system crashes do you get Blue Screens? Have you tried to scan for infections via Safe Mode?

Info needed - what service pack is loaded for XP ? Which version of IE is it? Have IE updates been installed? What 'extra' support features have been installed for IE ? e,g. Google toolbar etc.
